You’ve already given me more than enough,Margaret said plainly. Besides, you’re polite and well- mannered. I quite like that about you. Even if the fee were lacking, it wouldn’t matter. I take patients more by mood than anything.

She tidied up her acupuncture tools as she spoke. Rest here for a while. I’ll wait for you downstairs.

With that, she headed down.

By the time she’d prepared the herbal medicine, Keith had also come down the stairs.

Julie stared at Keith in undisguised admiration, leaning close to whisper, That gentleman has such an extraordinary bearing. He’s so tall, nearly as tall as Prince Theodore. I wonder what he looks like under that mask

Margaret set the medicine packet on the table. Remember what I saidtake the medicine on time without fail.

Keith nodded, picked up the medicine, and turned to leave.

Yet he paused at the door. He pulled something from his chest, then walked slowly back to Margaret.

Under her confused gaze, he placed a jade pendant before her.

This is the most valuable possession I have left,Keith said quietly. I offer it to you now as my full consultation fee. Thank you for your kindness today.

Before Margaret could reply, he turned and walked out the door with the medicine in hand.

Margaret stared after him, lost for words.

Is he out of his mind?

I already told him the fee was more than enough, yet he still left his most precious treasure behind.

His voice is so pleasant, too,Julie smiled, You’ve seen his face, haven’t you? With such graceful manners, he must be incredibly handsome under that mask.”

Margaret shot her an exasperated look. You’ve got far too much free time lately.

Julie stuck out her tongue playfully. I just don’t want you to be bored, so I chat with you a little. Lisa loves gossiping about these things, too, when you’re awayshe talks about Cyan all the time. What do you think of Cyan, Ms. Campbell?

Seeing Margaret ignore her, she grinned and went on, I think that gentleman we just met has even finer bearing than Cyan, and he’s far gentler, too. Don’t you agree?

Margaret shook her head helplessly. You’ll be getting married someday soon, and I’ll find you a good

match.

With that, she left the medicine shop.

She planned to go next door and sit a while at Sweet Breeze Dining, only to find its main gates tightly shut in broad daylight.

It’s the middle of the day; they wouldn’t close for no reason. What’s going on?

Curiosity gnawed at her, and she noticed plainclothes guards posted all around the entrance.

Though dressed like ordinary townsfolk, each wore a sword at their waistnearly a dozen men stood watch right outside.

This doesn’t look good.

Something must have happened inside.

Her heart tightened with unease. Unable to enter through the front gate, she circled around to the back and slipped in through the rear door.

The back entrance opened right at the foot of the staircase. Beside it was the door leading to the kitchen.

The kitchen was eerily quiet; traces of freshly prepared food covered the stove, yet not a single kitchen maid was in sight.

An unnatural stillness hung over the whole place.

She took a few steps toward the main hall, only to spot two royal guards standing at the staircase landing.

Margaret, meanwhile, was standing right behind them.

Their uniforms mark them clearly as palace soldiers.

Important nobility must be upstairs.

Just then, the sound of desperate weeping and pleas drifted over,

What have we done wrong? Why are you arresting us?

Don’t draw your knife. Please don’t draw your knife. We really don’t know what we did wrong

Four waiters crouched trembling on the floor, heads bowed, looking utterly terrified.

Jonas crouched among them, shaken to his core.

He lifted his head cautiously and stammered, If the food at our feast hall displeased your lordships, we’ll remake every dish at once.”
