Noelle was overcome with emotion, hurling every item on the table straight at Margaret in her fury.
Margaret made no move to dodge. She walked toward her slowly and gently. “Princess Noelle, please calm down. I mean you no harm. I am a woman, too, and I can help you.”
“I don’t want your help! Get away from me!” Noelle shouted.
Margaret said, “No. You do need it.”
She slipped a hand into her sleeve, pretending to take out a pack of sanitary pads, and set it softly on the table,
Then she continued, “When I had my first menstruation, I knew nothing about it either, and I made a mess of my clothes, too. No one was there to teach me back then. In truth, you are far luckier than I was.”
“I’m sure the palace maids must have told you about this already,” Margaret said softly. “Since you know what it is, you ought to understand it comes to every woman. There is no shame in it at all–it is perfectly natural. It simply means you have grown up at last. You have no reason to feel embarrassed.”
Noelle’s face flushed bright red. She stared at the elegantly wrapped item on the table, her temper fading a little. “What is this thing?”
Margaret said, “It’s called sanitary pads. I use them whenever my period comes. I also have disposable undergarments–fine quality, easy to wear and replace. I’ll show you how to use them later.”
Strange as her unfamiliar words sounded, Noelle’s rage ebbed away further. “You will teach me?”
‘I will,” Margaret replied gently. “We are both women, and I am much older than you. It is only right that I guide you. There is no need to be so nervous. Aside from your personal maid and me, no one else knows what has happened. If no one is aware, why let yourself be so upset?”
Noelle bit her lip, her eyes growing misty. “I don’t know who might have seen. I only realized something was wrong halfway up the stairs. Joyce told me my skirt was stained red, and I panicked. I have no idea how many people witnessed it. I’m so ashamed. I’ve lost all my dignity.”
“There is nothing to be ashamed of,” Margaret said, drawing closer slowly. “Every woman goes through this. No one will laugh at you, And you are Princess Noelle–who would ever dare mock you?”
She did her best to calm Noelle. “Rest easy. As long as we keep this quiet, no one will know. Even if someone did see, no one would dare speak a word against you. If any rumors ever spread to tarnish your reputation, you may deal with those who speak ill of you then.”
Noelle shook her head anxiously. “It will be too late by then. If Father and Mother learn I’ve brought shame upon myself, they’ll surely…”
“They will never know,” Margaret assured her. “As long as I stay silent, and your maid stays silent, no one will ever find out.”
But Noelle shook her head again. “This unclean thing has come upon me, and I snuck out of the palace besides. Mother will be furious. Father will stop doting on me. Everyone will think I’m filthy and

unworthy…”
Margaret cut in, “Princess Noelle, menstruation is not shameful, nor does it make you unclean.”

“No, you’re wrong,” Noelle insisted stubbornly. “It is the most disgraceful, unclean occurrence. Any woman who has it must stay confined to her chambers, never stepping foot outside–lest she bring impurity upon the world. As a royal princess, to be stained like this, and nearly seen by commoners… I’m ruined. I must kill everyone here to keep it secret. If Mother were here, she would order them all executed, too. Are you plotting to harm me?”
Watching her grow agitated once more, Margaret finally understood.
Deep–rooted old beliefs could never be changed with mere words.
No amount of explanation would alter what she’d been taught since childhood, ingrained into her very soul.
A surge of sorrow washed over Margaret’s heart.
She stepped forward and pulled Noelle gently into her arms.
Noelle trembled all over. “What are you doing? I’m unclean right now…”
