“There’s no need to waste fresh water like this,” Julie protested. “I’m perfectly clean, and you are, too.”

“Save me that line,” Margaret said firmly. “I’m heading back downstairs for some honey water. You two behave yourselves. If you want a proper bath, draw a full bucket each. No need to be so frugal.”

Lisa stuck out her tongue. “All right.”

With that, Margaret left the room.

Once the door closed, Julie finally let out a breath of relief.

Lisa quickly checked every corner of the chamber. “Where did he go? Where’s he hiding?”

Julie nodded toward the ceiling.

Lisa’s eyes widened. “On the roof?”

“Yes.”

“Then he must have seen everything just now.”

“He’s a proper gentleman,” Julie said hastily. “He wouldn’t peek. Besides, there’s no opening up there–he couldn’t see a thing anyway.”

She looked flustered as she added, “The streets are swarming with guards today, leaving him no way to slip out. I’d planned to keep him hidden here with me, but when the door suddenly opened, he had no choice but to leap out the window and hide on the roof.”

Lisa grabbed a gown and hurried to drape it over Julie’s shoulders. “You shouldn’t have pretended to bathe like that. If the guards had stepped inside, it would have been disastrous.”

“I only drew the hot water to let Herman wash his wounds,” Julie explained. “I never expected the guards to show up so quickly. I panicked and had no other choice. Don’t worry. I still had my clothes on–only my shoulders were exposed above the water.”

She dressed herself properly as she spoke. “Still;.. Can we really keep this hidden from Ms. Campbell?”

“It’s too late to turn back now,” Lisa sighed helplessly. “There’s nothing we can do.”

She shot Julie a reproachful look. “You’re far too quick to side with a stranger you barely know. What if you’ve trusted the wrong man?”

Julie said, “It’s him. I’m certain of it.”

“He’s a wanted fugitive now,” Lisa warned. “Guards are patrolling every street. If word gets out you’re sheltering him, you’ll be in terrible danger, too.”

“That’s exactly why we can’t let Ms. Campbell find out,” Julie said. “She’s already done so much for us. We can’t drag her into trouble.”

She paused, then went on, “I don’t know why the guards are hunting Herman, but I know he’s a good man. He saved my life when we were children. I have to return the favor now. I’d never rest easy if I abandoned him.”

“You’re being foolish,” Lisa chided. “You’ve talked about this savior of yours for years, always saying you’d repay him by marrying him someday. Let me warn you right now–that must never happen. If you tie your life to his, you’ll ruin your future entirely.”

Her tone turned earnest. “You’re my only close friend. Promise me you’ll stay sensible and not do anything reckless.”

“Relax, Lisa, nothing will go wrong,” Julie said. “Ms. Campbell is from the Prime Minister’s Estate after all. Even if trouble arises, she’ll protect us.”

“You were just saying we couldn’t drag Ms. Campbell into this, and now you’re thinking of relying on her when trouble arises. This is absolutely ridiculous,” Lisa sighed. “Speak of it–can he hear us talking right now? If he can, I wish he’d leave at once. Don’t bring trouble to you, or to…”

“Enough, Lisa. You should go now,” Julie cut her off quickly. “Staying here too long will only arouse suspicion.”

Julie quickly pushed Lisa out.

Lisa shook her head helplessly and finally took her leave.

As soon as Lisa was gone, Julie shut the door tightly. “Herman, they’ve all left. You can come down now.”

No sooner had she spoken than a dark figure leaped quietly back into the room through the window.
