Julie suddenly spun around, her face dead serious. “The really crazy part? Even the county magistrate was in on it. Bet you didn’t see that coming.”

Herman casually hid the dart behind his back.

But Julie was too caught up in her story to notice. “Right when everything was about to go wrong, Ms. Campbell stepped in front of us. Look–they could’ve just run off and come back for us later, given who they are. But that magistrate was watching us like a hawk, saying he’d take care of us that very night. And the men from the village? They’d lost their minds–saying if we couldn’t be sold, they’d keep us for themselves. If Ms. Campbell hadn’t stood up for us, even if they’d come back later, none of us would’ve kept our honor.

“You don’t know what it was like. After we were taken, those kidnappers were always grabbing at us. At least they wanted us in one piece to get a good price, so they never actually hurt us that way.

“But the men from our village? They would’ve done real damage. If they’d decided we weren’t worth selling, they would’ve just taken what they wanted. The only reason we all came out of there with anything left is that Ms. Campbell risked her life to protect us. She saved every single one of us. She’s the kindest person in the whole world.”

Julie raised her eyebrows. “So now you know–she’s pretty amazing, right?”

Herman thought for a moment. “Yeah.”

Julie continued, “So you see, I owe her everything. That’s why I moved to Breston–because of her. I wanted to spend my whole life repaying her, working like a servant if I had to. But instead, she treated me like a friend and gave me this wonderful life. Tell me–how could I ever pay that back?”

Herman’s hands curled into fists. The dart was long gone.

Julie laughed. “Just rest here for a while. Don’t worry about anything. Those people are probably gone by now. I think I can go downstairs again. Just call if you need anything.”

She turned and walked out.

Herman stayed where he was, narrowing his eyes, thinking about something.

After coming downstairs, Margaret finally took Winter back to the Prime Minister’s Estate.

“Ms. Campbell, you’ve been dressing so simply lately. But tomorrow we’re going to the palace. You need to look your best. At least pick something pretty to wear–so you can look dignified standing next to Prince Theodore,” Winter said the moment they walked in.

Margaret felt a little helpless, but she was used to Winter’s fussing by now. She hadn’t expected to run straight into Christopher just a few steps later.

Her heart skipped a beat. She stepped back without thinking.

Winter quickly curtsied. “Greetings, Crown Prince Christopher.”

Christopher’s eyes stayed locked on Margaret. “Margaret, it’s been a while.”

Margaret sneered, “We just saw each other a few days ago, Crown Prince Christopher. Your memory must be slipping.”

She couldn’t manage a kind expression–not after how their last meeting had gone.

And he has nerve. After what happened, he’s acting like nothing’s wrong?

Christopher replied, “A day without you feels like an eternity.”

Everyone within earshot froze, eyes wide. Even Winter looked shocked.

What’s going on?

Since when is Crown Prince Christopher acting like this?

Before anyone could recover, Christopher added, “Darren woke up. Every healer at the Life Preserve Pavilion said there was no hope for him. But he woke up in your hands. I had no idea your medical skills were that advanced.”

Margaret answered flatly, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going back.”

She started to leave.

Christopher reached out and took her hand. “That’s not why I came. Tomorrow is Mother’s birthday banquet. Will you come with me? If you agree, I can convince my parents to take our engagement back.”

Margaret gently pushed his hand away. “Sorry, Crown Prince Christopher. I already promised to go with Prince Theodore,”

Christopher’s face darkened, “Uncle Theodore again. Tell me the truth–what’s going on between you and Uncle Theodore?”

“That’s none of your business, is it?” Margaret’s voice turned cold. “Crown Prince Christopher, have you forgotten? Your wedding to Stella is right around the corner. And here you are, grabbing at me. What would people say?”

Christopher flinched at her coldness, still unable to accept it. “I know you’re upset about Stella. But I told her–my parents don’t like her. The best she’ll ever be is Royal Consort, Crown Princess? I always wanted that to be you.”

His words stunned everyone present once again.

Even Timothy, standing in the distance, stared with wide eyes.

He had been about to walk over, but now he was frozen completely in place.
