Winter stared in surprise. “Men from the Ducal Palace? Could they be searching for the assassin who tried to kill you last night?”
At the thought of the killer, she unconsciously touched the back of her head. She was lucky Margaret had tended her wound in time; otherwise, she might not have woken up for days.
Margaret merely nodded. “They are, yet there’s still no sign of him. Breston is vast. Scouring every corner one by one is little better than searching for a needle in a haystack. I hold little hope they’ll catch him soon.”
Winter blinked blankly. “Prince Theodore has sent so many men just to hunt down whoever meant to harm you. He truly treats you far more specially than anyone else.”
“He still needs me to cure his poison,” Margaret replied plainly. “If I were killed, his poison would eventually claim his life. He has good reason to look out for me.”

Margaret gazed out at the bustling street below. Teams of guards searched every shop one after another, split into small squads of four or five men each. They worked their way steadily from one end of the street to the other.
Their presence drew crowds of onlookers everywhere they passed. Folks whispered, wondering what grave trouble had befallen Breston.
Just then, a voice drifted over. “There’s hardly anyone upstairs. No need to search further.”
It was Lisa.
She stood firmly at the stairway, facing three guards from the Ducal Palace.
One of the men said, “Please stand aside. We shall only take a quick look and be on our way.”
“The upper floors are all empty,” Lisa insisted. “You’ll only waste your time going up.”
The three guards ignored her protests, brushed past her, and climbed the stairs.
Lisa grew flustered and hurried after them. “Truly, there’s no one up there at all.”
Sensing Lisa’s odd unease, Margaret frowned and followed quietly behind, “Lisa, what are you doing?“.
Relieved to see Margaret arrive, Lisa rushed to explain, “These men mean to rummage through the entire inn. It’s terribly disrespectful.”
“Let them search,” Margaret said calmly. “The rooms are empty anyway. They’ll leave once they’ve checked.”
Lisa still looked anxious. “But…”
“Are you keeping something from me?” Margaret asked softly.
Lisa fidgeted awkwardly. “It’s nothing. Julie brewed a bucket of hot water upstairs to bathe. She’s never had

the luxury of bathing in warm water like this before. With everyone busy downstairs, she didn’t dare let anyone know and snuck up here alone. I’m afraid someone will see her–it wouldn’t be proper.”
She hurried forward as she spoke. The guards were about to push open the door to Julie’s room when Lisa called out at once, “Someone is bathing inside. You cannot enter.”
The guards glanced at her, yet still reached for the door.
Margaret stepped forward of her own accord. “Leave this chamber unsearched. I shall look inside myself.”
The three men clearly recognized Margaret. They exchanged a brief glance and moved to check the next room instead.
They found nothing out of place and bowed respectfully before taking their leave.
Lisa let out a long breath of relief.
To her shock, Margaret pushed open the door anyway.
Lisa panicked. “Ms. Campbell…”
A startled gasp came from inside. At the sight of Margaret, Julie slipped fully beneath the water’s surface. “Ms. Campbell! Why have you come up here?”
Margaret glanced around the empty room. “You two were acting so furtive all for a simple bath? It hardly warrants all this secrecy.”
Lisa scratched her head awkwardly. “We were just sneaking a moment of leisure while no one’s looking. It would feel improper if anyone caught us.”
“You both are my people,” Margaret said helplessly. “Never mind one bath–you may bathe every day if you wish. No one would dare stop you. Why trouble yourselves with such trivial worries?”
She added, “Besides, why bathe in broad daylight? There’s plenty of time once night falls.”
Julie looked embarrassed. “The guest rooms are all occupied after dark. I’ve never gotten to enjoy such a fine private room before,”
“You two are truly impossible,” Margaret said with a faint smile. “I told you both you could move upstairs to rest long ago, yet you insisted on staying in the cramped storage room downstairs. Now you see how much nicer the upper rooms are?”
“The upstairs chambers are for paying guests,” Julie said nervously. “We only sneak up now and then to enjoy them ourselves.”
She turned to Lisa quickly. “You said we shouldn’t waste all this hot water. I’m finished bathing–do you want to soak, too?”
Lisa closed the door at once and slipped off her outer dress. “Will you join us, too, Ms. Campbell?”
Catching sight of the four–leaf clover birthmark on Lisa’s shoulder, Margaret stepped forward at once and pulled her dress back into place. “No one shares the same bathwater. It’s not as if I cannot afford fresh water for both of you.”
