Nadia jumped in fright, nearly letting out a scream.

Stella marched angrily toward the black–robed man in the courtyard. “What good is your Lynx Gang anyway? You said you’d send your best assassin for the job. How could he fail? Why is Margaret still safe and sound?”

Nadia nodded in agreement, still flustered. “Yes, why is she completely unharmed? Not a single stir has come from her side at all.”

The black–robed man stood calmly in the center of the yard and held out a hand slowly. “The rest of the silver marks?”

“How dare you ask for the rest of the payment?” Stella glared at him furiously. “I paid a million silver marks–do you think this is a game? You failed to kill her, and now you want the other half a million?”

“I’m warning you,” she snapped. “Fail to finish the job, and you’ll never get the remaining silver marks.”

The man lowered his hand. “Our assassin failed, but…”

Before he could finish, Stella cut him off sharply, “How could he fail? You explicitly told me he was your gang’s most skilled killer.”

“He is indeed our top operative, one of the most famed assassins in the realm with a perfect record of success,” the man said coldly. “This was an accident. He will succeed next time for certain.

“If he fails again, I’ll send another killer to take his place.”

Stella eyed him doubtfully. “Your gang has a small reputation, but you can’t have endless assassins at your disposal. If your very best man couldn’t get the job done, what chance do the others have?”

“Margaret has a powerful expert guarding her,” the man stated flatly.

“Nonsense,” Stella retorted angrily. “She has no one of the sort. All she has in her courtyard is one timid maid…”

“Prince Theodore assigned her a personal shadow guard,” the man explained. “Handpicked by the Ducal Palace, his martial arts are extraordinary. With Prince Theodore protecting her, even our top assassin was doomed to fail.”

“You’re the leader of the Lynx Gang,” Stella snapped irritably. “If your men can’t do it, why not take matters into your own hands yourself? Are you saying your own skill is inferior to your assassins?”

The man narrowed his eyes. “You speak the truth–some of my underlings have surpassed me in ability. If even he failed, now is simply not the right time to strike.”

Stella sighed, “Then what am I supposed to do?”

The next morning, Dawn had barely broken when Margaret was woken by Winter.

She had no idea where Winter got so much energy; she’d already fixed Margaret’s makeup, styled her hair, and placed her hair ornaments all in one smooth motion before Margaret even fully woke up.

When Margaret finally roused herself, she stared at her reflection in the mirror, hardly recognizing her own transformed appearance.

“I never knew you were so skilled at this,” Margaret said softly.

She looked so delicate and charming in the mirror that she half thought she was still dreaming.

Winter picked two bracelets from the jewelry box and slipped one onto Margaret’s wrist. “You always refused to let me do your makeup before, saying you were too plump. Now that you’ve slimmed down so much, you ought to dress up properly–especially for a formal occasion like visiting the palace.”

She then chose a pair of earrings. “Besides, you never had such fine jewelry before. Prince Theodore has sent so many gifts lately, filling your jewelry box to the brim. It would be such a waste not to wear any of it.”
