Chapter 36 More Gifts?

“What did I even do wrong?” Margaret said. “Why do I have to apologize? I already told you–I don’t like Crown Prince Christopher, and I don’t want to be Crown Princess. Why won’t you people just leave me alone?”
She wanted to turn around and leave. But they were blocking the door.
Jasper looked at her, furious. His teeth were practically grinding. “Margaret.”
Then Stella spoke. “You don’t like Crown Prince Christopher?” She put a hand over her mouth. “So you really have fallen for someone else?”
She paused for effect. “I heard that yesterday, Margaret brought a man back to her courtyard. No one knows how long he stayed…”
“What did you say?” Christopher roared before she even finished. “Margaret–have you no shame? You’re a lady, and you brought a strange man to the estate? To your own courtyard?”
Jasper quickly jumped in. “Stella doesn’t know what she’s talking about. It was just a carriage driver. The servants must have gotten the story wrong.”
Then he added, “The driver only gave Margaret a ride home. He’s an old man. There’s no way Margaret would be interested in him.”
Stella wanted to say more, but it wasn’t proper for her to push too hard. She shot a quick look at Nadia.
Nadia understood immediately. “But that was a carriage driver from the Ducal Palace. Everyone from the Ducal Palace has status. Even if Ms. Campbell were interested in him–that would be perfectly normal, wouldn’t it?”
Christopher’s fists clenched. “Margaret. You’ve really outdone yourself. After me, you’re looking at a carriage driver? Who exactly are you trying to insult?”
Stella quickly added, “Crown Prince Christopher, please don’t be angry. You are the exalted Crown Prince. After you broke off the engagement, of course, no one in the world would dare to have Margaret. If she did get involved with a carriage driver–well, that would be understandable…”
Christopher was too furious to listen. He just kept glaring at Margaret. “I don’t even recognize you anymore. You used to cling to me every day–terrified I’d fall for someone else. Ever since you started playing hard to get, you’ve gotten addicted, haven’t you? You’d take a carriage driver just to spite me?”
Margaret pressed her hand to her forehead.
These people are insane. What am I supposed to say?
They won’t listen.
They won’t believe me.
They won’t let me leave. They won’t even let me sit down.

Can someone please come save me?

When she didn’t move, Christopher shouted. “Margaret–get over here. Do you want this last chance or not?”
His anger startled even Stella.
A moment ago, she had only suspected. Now she was sure. Christopher was waiting for Margaret to give in.
He still has feelings for her
Damn it.
This cannot happen.
It’s all Jasper’s fault. My place as Crown Princess should have been locked in. Why does he keep fighting for that fat
cotu?
She glanced at Jasper. He was staring at Margaret, too–his eyes full of worry.
Even though his face is red with anger, he is still thinking about her.
Unbelievable.
“Margaret.” Jasper said, shaky on his feet as he walked toward her. “Crown Prince Christopher has given you an opening. Just give in a little. I truly want you to be happy. If you let him walk away today–from now on, who in the world will want you?”
He stopped in front of her. “Don’t throw your whole life away over a moment of stubbornness. Look at all those engagement gifts in the courtyard. Are you really not tempted?”
Just then, a guard rushed in from outside.
“Crown Prince Christopher!” the guard announced. “A large number of carriages have arrived outside. Crowds are lining the streets. Everyone is saying–they’re your engagement gifts.”
At the words “engagement gifts,” Stella reacted first,
Her eyes went wide with surprise. She looked at Christopher, shy and pleased. “Crown Prince Christopher -you’ve already brought so much. You didn’t have to bring more…”
Jasper was stunned, too.
More gifts? On top of everything already in the courtyard?
This is beyond anything I could have imagined.
Christopher, however, looked confused. Clearly, he had no idea what was happening
Another guard leaned in and whispered. “Crown Prince Christopher, aren’t all of our gifts already in the courtyard?”
