Christopher didn’t hesitate. “I did what any man in the world would do. And my choice–any man in the world would have made the same one.

“You stayed with me through the darkest days. I really did want to marry you as my Crown Princess. But Stella is innocent and sweet, gentle and kind—I long for her, too. In this world, the strong rule everything, and every great man has multiple wives. I only wanted you and your sister. And still you act like this. You just don’t know when you’re well off.”

He took a breath and calmed down. “Forget it. Talking is useless now. The engagement is over. You go your way. Just don’t come back regretting your choice.”

“Don’t worry.” Margaret said slowly, her face completely indifferent. “Everyone in the world could regret something, and I still wouldn’t.”

Seeing her like that only made Christopher feel worse. But before he could say another word, a guard rushed up to him.

“Crown Prince Christopher,” the guard said. “Queen Norma requests your immediate presence at the palace.”

Christopher clenched his jaw. “Tell Mother I’ll be there soon. Stella seems badly hurt. I want to check on her first-”

The guard stepped directly in front of him. “Crown Prince Christopher, you should go to the palace now.”

Christopher sighed. He must have sensed something. Without another word, he followed the guard and left.

The moment he was gone, Margaret slipped back to her small courtyard.

The boxes outside were piled like mountains. Inside the courtyard, big boxes and small boxes filled every inch of space. Her heart raced.

Not long ago, I was broke. Now I am rich.

Really, truly rich.

If I had known Prince Theodore was this generous, I would have taken even better care of him.

She started opening the boxes, one by one,

“Ms. Campbell.” Winter’s voice came out of nowhere. By the time Margaret noticed her, she was already standing right there.

Winter’s eyes sparkled. “Are all these really yours? You really saved Prince Theodore’s life? And he really- he gave you all this?”

Margaret looked at the boxes of fine fabric in front of her and nodded. “Yes. This fabric is excellent, Take some and make yourself a few new dresses. And make some for me, too–smaller sizes. I’ll need them in two months.”

Margaret nodded again. “Just pretend you’re making them for Stella. I’ve always been about the same size as her. Once I lose the weight, her clothes should fit me fine. So go ahead and make me several new outfits

-use her measurements.”

“Ms. Campbell, what are you talking about?” Winter said, looking embarrassed. “I know you’ve been exercising. And I can see you’ve lost some weight. But losing enough to look like Ms. Stella Campbell–in just a few months? I don’t think that’s possible.”

She looked at the fabric with regret. “This is top–quality material. Even better than what the Prime Minister’s Estate uses. If the dresses are too small and you can’t wear them–what a waste that would be.”

“Don’t worry.” Margaret said. “Just have them made. Don’t overthink it.”

“But-”

“Just do what I say.”

Winter bit her lip. “Yes, Ms. Campbell.”

Margaret set aside the boxes of silk and brocade and handed them to Winter. Then she started counting the jewelry.

Hairpins, earrings, pearls, necklaces, and luminous sea pearls filled several boxes.

Inside each large box were smaller boxes; every small box held something beautiful.

Margaret wasn’t really interested in jewelry. She picked two pieces at random and gave them to Winter.
