Chapter 43 You Should Still Keep Her

Winter stared at her blankly. “Can your storeroom even fit all that?”

“Well.” Margaret said, “I had someone turn the larger items into bills of exchange. So there’s plenty of

room.”

With that, she yawned and went back inside. After working hard all day, she just wanted to rest for a bit.

But Winter stood in the courtyard, still stunned,

Even if they moved everything into the storeroom–could it really be done that fast?

She knew every master in the estate had their own storeroom. But Margaret’s was tucked in the corner of the courtyard. It was usually empty and very small.

Winter glanced at the storeroom in the corner. Then she scratched her head.

Maybe I am overthinking it. Ms. Campbell said everything had been moved into the storeroom. So that must be true. I should stop worrying about it.

Meanwhile, the moment Christopher returned to the palace, he hurried straight to Norma’s chambers.

But the second he stepped through the door, a hand came down hard on his face.

The blow made him stumble two steps back,

Christopher looked up, shocked. When he saw it was Norma, he lowered his head immediately. “Mother.”

“So you finally decided to show up.” Norma’s voice was ice cold. She turned and swept back into the room without another word.

Christopher scrambled to his feet and followed her inside. “You summoned me, Mother, and I came as fast as I could. What has made you so angry?”

“You have the nerve to ask?” Norma snapped. She sat down in the main seat, her face dark.

Christopher looked at her, completely confused.

Norma took a deep breath. “Stella. She is not fit to be Crown Princess.”

So that’s what this is about.

Christopher said, “Mother, I truly love Stella. We feel the same way about each other. I went to propose today because she is the love of my life. I don’t think I did anything wrong”

“Love of your life?” Norma’s eyes narrowed. “If that’s true, then where was she all those years when you couldn’t walk? Now that you’re back on your feet, does she suddenly love you? You say such foolish things -how do you expect to keep your place as Crown Prince?”

Christopher quickly said, “It’s not like that, Mother, I’ve explained this to you before. Stella—‘

“You believe that garbage? You’re willing to believe it–I’m not even willing to listen to it.” Norma’s voice rose. “A woman who lies for a living. Cheap, pathetic lies. What kind of spell has she cast on you that you defend her like this? You won’t even listen to your own mother. I was already being generous by letting you marry her as Royal Consort. And you went behind my back to make her Crown Princess. Do you really not see what you did wrong?”

It was clear Norma was furious.

Christopher shifted uncomfortably, “Mother, you’ve always spoiled me. I thought marrying a wife was just -well, I didn’t think I needed to report it to you. Besides, they’re sisters, both legitimate daughters of the Prime Minister. Does it really matter which one is the Crown Princess and which one is Royal Consort?”

He pressed on. “I don’t know what Margaret told you. But she lies all the time. She’s always saying things to smear Stella’s name. Don’t believe her.”

Norma sneered. “You think I stopped you from marrying Stella because of what Margaret said?”

Christopher clenched his fists. “Isn’t it?”

Norma let out a heavy breath. “You are impossibly stupid. Stella abandoned you when you were at your lowest. Everyone in the kingdom knows it. She’s heartless. No one needed Margaret to say a thing.”

“That’s not true,” Christopher insisted. “Stella didn’t abandon me—”

“Then tell me what she did for those two or three years. Where did she live? If she was really taken in by some miracle doctor, surely she could have come home once in a while.” Norma’s eyes narrowed. “The story is full of holes. You might believe it. I do not.”

She leaned forward. “And another thing. She was gone for two or three years, How can you prove she’s still pure? How do you know she wasn’t carrying on with other men while she was away? If a woman like that becomes Crown Princess, you’ll be the laughingstock of the kingdom. And if she becomes queen one day, all of Northpoint will be a joke.”

Christopher shook his head. “Mother, it’s not that serious. She-”

“Quiet.” Norma’s voice was sharp. “Even now, you won’t admit you’re wrong? Margaret may be heavy, but her features are fine. She looks dignified. Once she becomes Crown Princess, I’ll assign some ladies to guide her. They’ll help her lose the weight. She’s no less beautiful than Stella. Why can’t you see that?”

Norma softened her tone. “Besides, Margaret has lived in Breston her whole life. She’s a true noble lady. She speaks properly and behaves well. Even after you became crippled, she stayed by your side. I’ve even heard she tested medicine for you. That’s real devotion. You may not love her–but you should still keep her. She is the best choice for Crown Princess.”
