Chapter 44 I Can’t Cure It
Sunbed
Christopher gritted his teeth. “It’s all an act. She seems gentle and obedient on the surface, but behind closed doors, she bullies the servants. And sure, her features are fine–but with her size, losing weight is easier said than done.
“As for staying by my side back then–she could see my potential. She must have guessed I would become Crown Prince one day, so she brown–nosed me early. Or maybe it’s simpler than that. Back then, she was just a fat girl. Even as a legitimate daughter of the Prime Minister, she couldn’t land any handsome, high- ranking man. I was her best option. So she stuck around. I don’t owe her anything. And now—she wrote the annulment herself. There’s no way I’m begging her to stay.”
Norma sighed softly. “You’ve already broken her heart. The problem now isn’t whether you want to marry her–it’s that even if you wanted to, she wouldn’t take you. You’d be better off looking at other noble ladies. Either way, Stella can only ever be your Royal Consort. If you insist on making her Crown Princess, I will personally demote her to a concubine.”
Her voice had softened, but Christopher could tell–she wasn’t bluffing.
She truly disliked Stella.
And she truly wasn’t going to give her any chance.
But strangely, Christopher didn’t feel all that disappointed. Even when Norma told him he couldn’t marry Stella as the Crown Princess, he didn’t feel like fighting back.
He just felt… off.
Christopher had always assumed Margaret had been bad–mouthing Stella to Norma–that was why Norma disliked her.
He had always assumed Margaret loved him so much she would fight Stella for everything; he even thought Margaret would stop at nothing to win him.
But the truth was–Margaret hadn’t said a word to Norma.
She really did want to break the engagement.
And she really didn’t want to be his Crown Princess anymore.
“You may leave,” Norma said. “I will continue searching for a suitable wife for you. I won’t force you to give up Stella entirely–but I will announce to the kingdom that next month, Stella will marry you as a concubine. As for Crown Princess–if it’s not Margaret, I will personally choose someone else.”
Christopher opened his mouth, then closed it. Norma’s face was dark. He didn’t dare argue.
“I understand,” he said.
Norma nodded. She didn’t have the heart to keep scolding him. “Life is full of trade–offs. Being able to spend your days with someone you love–that alone is a blessing. Titles don’t matter if your heart is in the right place.”
Chapter 44 Can’t Cure it
Christopher lowered his eyes. “I know.”
He rose and walked toward the door.
Just as he reached the threshold, Norma’s voice stopped him. “I heard Margaret has changed completely lately. She suddenly mastered medicine and was chosen by Theodore as his personal physician.”
Christopher’s face darkened. “Yes.”
Norma’s eyes narrowed. “No wonder she was willing to let you go.”
Christopher’s fists tightened. “Fine by me.”
Then a sharp pain shot through his arm. He frowned and hurried out.
“Call the royal doctor.” he said.
It was the same arm he had injured before. The wound had been shallow. But now the pain was unbearable–like someone was tearing it open.
Christopher clutched his arm and rushed back to the Crown Prince’s Estate. By the time he arrived, he was soaked in cold sweat.
It hurt–a tearing, ripping pain, as if someone was pressing down hard on the wound.
Christopher frowned.
Didn’t Stella’s medicine cure me? Why is it back?
And why does it hurt so much?
