CHAPTER 108 PART 2
Cosmo’s breath caught. That throw-that casual demonstration of mastery she’d spent years failing to achieve- carried movements identical to training sessions from three years ago, Sessions with a master whose face she could barely remember but whose technique was burned into her muscle memory.
It’s him. It has to be him.
Empowered by sudden understanding, Cosmo adjusted her grip and threw her scimitar- not at Kyle, but at Vincent, disrupting the Five Tigers’ formation. Then her hand released silver needles in a pattern Marcus had just demonstrated, each one following curved trajectories that exploited gaps in their defensive positioning.
This time, no poison. Just pure technique.
One needle found James’s thigh. Another caught Derek’s arm. The third-aimed with dragon-blessed precision despite Cosmo not possessing dragon power-struck Kyle’s other shoulder.
“Fall BACK!” Vincent shouted, realizing they’d catastrophically underestimated both opponents. “Flash bombs! NOW!”
Brian pulled grenades that erupted in blinding light and deafening sound. The Five Tigers vanished into smoke and chaos, their retreat covered by professional escape techniques honed through decades of survival.
“This isn’t over!” Vincent’s voice echoed from the darkness. “We’ll remember this, Empress! And you, Steel—you just made enemies of forces you don’t understand!”
Then they were gone, leaving only Kyle Anderson bleeding on the dock-the poison from Cosmo’s earlier needles finally claiming him. His body convulsed once, twice, and went still.
Silence fell over Zedekiah Wharf.
Cosmo turned to face Marcus, her scimitar raised but trembling, her voice carrying desperation that three years of searching couldn’t suppress. “Who are you? HOW do you know the Nine-Turn technique?! How do you move with power that feels like-that feels like—”
Marcus reached up and partially covered the lower half of his face with one hand, obscuring his features in a gesture Cosmo recognized instantly.
It was the exact pose her master had used during their first meeting when he’d saved her from slavers at age fifteen, his face hidden, his dragon aura blazing with protective fury,
“No,” Cosmo whispered, her weapon clattering to the ground. “It can’t be. You’re-you’re supposed to be-”
“Dead?” Marcus finished quietly, his dragon eyes glowing warmly now. “Missing? Vanished without explanation?
Tears streaming down her face, Cosmo dropped to her knees on the blood-stained dock. “Master. Master, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know. The bounty-I came to Grayson City because-I would never-”
“Cosmo.” Marcus’s voice carried that gentle authority she remembered from childhood training. “Ignorance isn’t a crime. You didn’t know Marcus Steel was me. How could you?”
“I should have sensed it!” Her voice broke completely, “Your power-your technique-I should have recognized―
“You did recognize,” Marcus corrected, “Just now. When I demonstrated the ninth turn. That’s why you attacked the Five Tigers instead of me.”

He walked closer, his dragon aura wrapping around her like it had when she was a child seeking protection from nightmares and trauma. “Stand up, Cosmo. You’re not the frightened girl I saved three years ago. You’re the Empress. One of the deadliest Shadow Warriors in existence.”
Cosmo rose shakily, her legendary composure shattered by overwhelming emotion. “Master, I’ve been searching. For three years. Every lead. Every rumor. I thought-I thought you were dead. Or worse.”
“My memories were damaged,” Marcus admitted. “Dragon power suppressed. I’ve been hiding in Grayson City, slowly recovering, trying to piece together what happened.”
“The attack,” Cosmo said, understanding flooding through her. “Three years ago. They ambushed you. Tried to kill you. I felt it through our master-student bond and tried to reach you,
but-”
“You were too late,” Marcus finished. “By the time you arrived, I’d already fled. Gone to ground. Hidden myself while my dragon memories reconstructed themselves.”
He looked at his disciple-at the young woman who’d grown from terrified teenager to legendary assassin—and made his decision.
