CHAPTER 109 PART 1

Marcus and Quinn’s Mansion- 12:47 AM

Marcus Steel pulled into his driveway with Cosmo sitting in the passenger seat, her legendary Empress persona completely shed. Gone was the deadly assassin who’d killed Shadow Warriors with casual efficiency. In its place sat a young woman in ordinary clothes, her hair tied back simply, her expression carefully neutral-just another person who wouldn’t draw a second glance.

“Remember,” Marcus said quietly as they approached the front door, “you’re nobody special. Just a friend passing through town who needs a place to stay.”

“Understood, Master,” Cosmo replied, then caught herself. “I mean-understood, Marcus.”

They entered the mansion together, and Marcus immediately sensed wrongness. His dragon senses detected ten heartbeats in the living room-far more than should be present at this hour. The lights blazed despite the late hour, and tension hung in the air like smoke.

The Hartford family was gathered in his living room like a tribunal. Karen Ridge sat imperiously on the central couch, Brandon beside her looking uncomfortable as always. Wesley and Tessa Hartford occupied chairs to the left, their expressions carrying vindictive satisfaction. Emeric Ridge perched on the ottoman, one arm still in a sling from Marcus’s earlier dragon-enhanced kick. And Federico Yarrow-bandaged, bruised, his forehead sporting fresh stitches-sat furthest from the door, his eyes widening with fear when Marcus entered.

Quinn Hartford stood near the fireplace, her cold indifference firmly in place, her Saintess aura glowing softly with barely suppressed stress. When she saw Marcus, relief flickered across her features before the mask returned.

“Marcus,” Quinn said carefully, her voice neutral. “We were just… chatting. About household arrangements.”

“At one in the morning?” Marcus’s dragon eyes swept the room, noting positions, body language, the way Federico instinctively shrank back when Marcus looked at him. “How productive.”

Karen’s attention locked onto Cosmo standing behind Marcus, and her expression transformed from hostile waiting to immediate suspicion. “Who is this? How did she get past the security gates?”

Cosmo stepped forward with rehearsed casualness, her legendary combat instincts completely hidden beneath ordinary mannerisms. “I’m Cosmo. Marcus’s sworn sister. I arrived in Grayson City tonight and needed a place to stay, so-

“Sworn sister?!” Karen’s voice climbed three octaves. “Marcus Steel has a SISTER?!”

The room erupted. Wesley leaned forward with sudden interest. Tessa exchanged meaningful glances with Emeric. Federico’s fear momentarily gave way to confusion.

“It’s complicated,” Marcus said quickly, internally cursing Cosmo’s deliberate choice of words. She was too intelligent to make that mistake accidentally-which meant she’d done it on purpose. “We’re not blood-related. It’s more of a-”

“I know exactly what it is,” Karen interrupted, standing with righteous fury blazing in her eyes. “Quinn! QUINN! Do you see this?! Your husband brings another woman into your house in the middle of the night and expects you to just accept it!”

Quinn’s Saintess aura flickered dangerously, “Mother, I’m sure there’s an explanation—”

“Explanation?!” Karen’s laugh was harsh and bitter. “Oh, I have an explanation! Remember that lie you told me last month? About Marcus’s wealthy brother suddenly giving him money? About how that explained the mansion

and the cars and the luxury lifestyle?”

She pointed at Cosmo with vindictive satisfaction. “THIS is the truth! Marcus Steel doesn’t have a wealthy brother! He has a wealthy MISTRESS! Probably supporting him the whole time while you-a Sacred Saintess— work yourself to exhaustion protecting him!”

“That’s ridiculous,” Marcus said flatly.
