Chapter 105

Confusion flickered across my face and Maxwell echoed my thoughts aloud. What does Nikolay have to do with any of this? He was ruthless, merciless- monster. And now he’s dead.

Elsa shook her head, a sad smile playing on her lips. So we thought. But according to the spirits, he was never truly evil. Nikolay was the one who kept the balance, who prevented greater evils from rising by taking on that darkness himself. Every life he took, every act of cruelty he committed, was calculated, necessary to prevent a far worse threat. Now that he is gone, no one is left to stem the tide. This is why the attacks have surged the predators sense the shift in power, the opportunity.

Her words left us in stunned silence. Nikolaythe monster we all hated, the enemy we’d sworn to destroyhad been the shield all along. He’d held the darkness at bay, sacrificing his own reputation, his own soul, so that others could live in peace. And we had celebrated his death, blind to the delicate

balance he maintained.

Lucian’s growl rumbled low and menacing. Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?

Elsa’s calm gaze met his, unwavering.

I am no god, Alpha Lucian. I do not wield magic at my command. I see only what the spirits allow me to see. I share what I know as it comes to me. The gods keep their secrets because they do not want us altering the course of fate. They give us fragments, not the full story, so that we cannot manipulate events. And fate is telling me now that another Vladislav is essential to combat this darkness. The irony, she added, her voice touched with regret, is that you may have already lost that chance. Wolfless or not, that girl was born with something powerful inside her, something that has only begun to awaken. That’s why I can’t find her. She’s protected by ancient magic.

I felt a surge of frustration, a sense of helplessness clawing at me. We’d come here seeking answers, some path forward, but instead we were leaving with more mysteries, our questions only multiplying.

Maxwell finally broke the silence. Then what are we supposed to do in the meantime? His tone was resigned, as if he already knew Elsa’s answer would bring little comfort.

Elsa looked at us, her eyes steely and determined. Go back to your pack, put your house in order, and prepare for the war that’s coming. Your people need stability and strength. Bring them together, command their loyalty. You don’t have the luxury of time.

Lucian took a shaky breath. And what of our mate? His voice was softer, full of an ache he could no longer mask.

Elsa sighed, her gaze growing distant. If she wills it, she’ll return. She is beyond your reach now, carried by forces far greater than any of us. She’s with the windfree, and untethered. There is nothing you can do to bring her back.

Her words felt like a knife to the chest, twisting deeper with each syllable. Scarlett was truly lost to us, slipping further away with every moment we couldn’t reach her.

The three of us left Elsa’s cottage, our steps weighed down by her words. I felt hollow, as if everything we’d fought for, everything we’d tried to hold onto, had slipped through our fingers. But that emptiness filled quickly with something darker, something colder. If I couldn’t bring Scarlett back, I would at least bring justice for her. Those who had turned against her, who’d left her to suffereach of them would answer for it. I’d lost the most precious thing in my life, and there was nothing left to hold me back.

We’ll keep searching for her,Maxwell said quietly as we walked back to the jeep, his voice full of quiet resolve. We have her photograph. We can start there. Offer a rewardsomething substantial. Make sure people are motivated to look for her.

It was a simple plan, but it was something, a small spark of hope in an otherwise hopeless situation. Yes,I agreed, nodding, clutching at the idea like a lifeline. We’ll search every town, every border, every inch of land until we find her. And whoever finds herthey’ll be richly rewarded.

It was the solution we’d hoped for, but it was a start. And right now, it was all we had.

now they will find out that Nicholas wasn’t the ruthless alpha they tht he was. I kind of had a feeling they misjudged him and for his sacrifices they killed him.
