Chapter 118
Lucian’s POV
I lay sprawled across the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling when it hit me–a silence so thick and unnatural that it seemed to fill the room. It wasn’t just a quiet moment; it felt like something essential had been cut off, like a lifeline severed. I couldn’t place what it was, but it was crushing, heavy, and painful in a way that words couldn’t explain.
My chest felt hollow, and an ache bloomed inside me, gripping tighter by the second.
Then, suddenly, Maxwell’s voice echoed in my head. “Lucian,” he called, his tone laced with confusion and alarm. “Did you feel that?”
“Yes,” I managed to reply, even though my voice felt weak, almost distant.
“What’s going on?” came Clay’s voice, tinged with the same dread I felt. The pain pulsed in me, but I forced myself to sit up, then dragged myself from the bed, feeling like I was moving through thick fog.
I stumbled into the living area, my heart pounding with a sense of foreboding. Something was terribly, terribly wrong. If we all felt it, it had to do with Scarlett. Nothing else could explain this emptiness, this aching disconnection.
Moments later, Maxwell and Clay joined me in the living room, both looking as shaken as I felt. Clay’s face was twisted in pain, and he winced, clutching his chest. “What’s going on?” he repeated, his voice edged with desperation.
My wolf, Tiger, stirred within me, and I heard his voice, grave and certain. “A partial severance.” The words stunned me, striking like a blow to the heart.
“Tiger said… it’s a partial severance,” I repeated aloud, looking from Maxwell to Clay. I didn’t need to explain further; I saw the understanding in their eyes. Their wolves would’ve told them the same thing, and from the way they looked at me, I could tell they understood the weight of what was happening.
“What should we do?” Maxwell asked, his voice trembling. Fear lingered there, something I hadn’t heard from him before.
I swallowed hard, the weight of guilt and sorrow settling heavy in my chest. I felt raw, exposed, as I replied, “I don’t know. She ran away… and now she’s trying to disconnect herself from us. She wants to move on. Isn’t it obvious? I doubt she’s coming back.”
The words tasted bitter, and they barely scratched the surface of the grief clawing through me. I felt broken inside, a hollow shell, and although Maxwell and Clay didn’t say it outright, I knew they blamed me. Scarlett was gone, and it was my fault could feel their silent accusations, sharp and cutting.
I was the one who’d invited Gregory. I was the one who told him to leave, fearing a war with the Alpha of the West. It was my pack members who’d turned against her, who conspired and testified, casting her out like she was nothing. I was the one who ordered her to be stripped and displayed as if she meant nothing. I was the one who held Clay back when he wanted to go after her, hesitating when I should’ve acted. It was all my fault. And in that moment, I hated myself more deeply than I ever thought possible. I didn’t need them to say it out loud–I could feel their resentment, their disappointment. I wore it like a scar.
“What should we do?” Clay asked again, his voice breaking, but I had no answer. I was empty, lost, and helpless. I didn’t know how to fix what I’d done.
Maxwell broke the silence, his face twisted with worry. “How did she do it? You’d need a seer’s magic for that sort of thing.”
His words jolted me from my thoughts, and I sat up straighter, grasping at any possible explanation. “Do you think she has a seer helping her?” I asked, a flicker of hope and dread mingling in my voice.
He shook his head slowly, and a heavy silence fell over us again until Clay spoke, his voice trembling. “Lucian… I’m worried. What if something happened to her? What if she was hurt while running what if she slipped into a coma or something?” His words brought a fresh wave of fear crashing over me. She bas
