Scarlett

Chapter 119

Clay’s voice was tense, sharp with rustration as he paced the room, explaining the situation to me. She didn’t go South, Lucian. We’ve sent people to scour that whole region, and she’s nowhere to be found there. The North, Eastthey’re out of the question, too. The West is our best bet. She could try to hide there, especially since she’d never blend in with the East. But we have no treaty with Alpha Keith. Our problems with Gregory have only made things worse between us and the Western pack. What right do we have to comb through the entire West for her?

His words made my heart sink. If she had indeed gone to the West, it wouldn’t be easy to get any answers or even begin a search. Alpha Keith guarded his territory fiercely, and without any alliance, we’d have no claim. Still, spuldn’t give up on the chance to find her, no matter how slim. I sat up, desperation simmering beneath my calm tone.

There’s no way they’ve finished combing through the South,I argued. Let’s give it another week. If we don’t find her there, thenwe’ll have to find a way to work with Alpha Keith. It’ll take time before he lets us through his borders, but it’s all we’ve got.

Maxwell shook his head, his eyes dark with worry. Lucian, if what’s happening with Scarlett is lifethreatening, a week might be too long. We could be too late by then.

The fear in his voice made my stomach twist. I could feel it tooan urgency, a growing dread that clawed at my insides, telling me she was slipping further and further away from us. I couldn’t just sit around and wait. Clay stepped forward with a determined look in his eyes, a spark of hope glinting through his own worry.

Let’s visit Elsa,he suggested, a faint sense of relief in his voice. She’ll be able to tell us if Scarlett’s life is in danger. We just need to bring something of Scarlett’s with us so she can get a reading.

The plan sounded like our best shot, and without another word, we each turned back to our rooms, moving slowly, painfully, each step feeling heavier than the last. We needed answers. We needed Scarlett. And the fear of what could’ve happened to her was unbearable.

As I stepped out of my room, I noticed people shrinking back, slipping away as if afraid to be seen. They all remembered what we’d done to those who had

wronged Scarlett, and I knew they feared that wrath might extend to anyone with even the slightest link to her suffering.

Stasia was still at large, evading us, but I hoped that we would find her soon and make her pay for what she’d done. Yet deep down, all I truly hoped for was

that Scarlett would be here to see itthat she’d be safe and come back to us.

While we waited for Maxwell to bring the jeep around, I glanced across the courtyard and spotted Martha, the florist. She was staring at me, her face a mask of mixed emotions, but the moment I looked her way, she quickly looked away, her gaze dropping to the flowers in her hands. Scarlett had always spoken highly of Martha when things were good between us. She’d said she was one of the few who treated her with kindness. I thought about Martha’s connection to Stasia and suddenly realized something. If Stasia cared about her aunt, she might return for her. It was a thin lead, but I had to follow every possibility.

Quickly, I linked a guard, instructing them to bring Martha in immediately but with strict orders that she wasn’t to be harmed. I knew Scarlett wouldn’t want her friend mistreated, but right now, I needed every clue, every advantage to bring her back to us. I needed to find her, no matter what it took.

The ache in my chest was unbearable. She was my mate, our mate, and I should’ve protected her better. I should’ve been the tyrant she needed to keep her safe, and I could only hope that, somehow, fate would give me another chance. If Scarlett returned, I swore I’d do everything in my power to make things right.

At last, Maxwell pulled up in the jeep, and Clay and I jumped in, ready to set off. As we drove, I told them what I’d instructed the guard to do with Martha, hoping she’d hold some answer, some clue. Clay shot me a look, disapproving, his brows furrowed.

You think locking up one of the only people who treated Scarlett with kindness will bring her back?he asked, his tone challenging.

I swallowed hard, understanding his anger. I know it’s not fair to her,I admitted. But we need her, Clay. Stasia might return for her, and if she does, we’ll
