Chapter 176
Lucian glanced at me, the urgency in his eyes mirroring my own worry. We stood there, silent, watching and waiting for some sign, some flicker of recognition. I couldn’t help but feel that whatever Scarlett was going through, it was far beyond anything we had ever encountered before, and it left me feeling helpless, terrified of what might come next.
We slipped the oversized shirt onto Scarlett, making sure she was as comfortable as possible, and waited for Dr. Ralph. When he arrived, he examined her carefully, but it was clear he had no answers. Her condition wasn’t something he’d ever encountered. Lucian’s frustration was evident, his face darkening as Dr. Ralph admitted his limitations, but none of us could expect a simple remedy. This was magical in nature, something far beyond our knowledge
I sat beside Scarlett on the bed, holding her hand, silently praying she would wake up soon. The feeling of helplessness gnawed at me. There was nothing worse than sitting there, utterly powerless, watching her suffer without being able to help.
“She doesn’t deserve this torment,” Clay said quietly, his voice thick with pain. “Magic was supposed to bring her peace, not all this… suffering. Maybe we should’ve left her with Keith. He would’ve known how to handle it.”
The words stung, but I knew Clay’s concern was genuine. “She wasn’t planning on going back to Keith,” I said softly. “Before everything happened tonight. she told me she didn’t want him in that way.”
Lucian’s eyes widened in surprise, a flicker of hope sparking in his gaze before he quickly masked it. I knew he was as afraid as I was to let that hope grow. knowing how much Scarlett had been through and how much pain we’d already caused.
“I don’t think she truly wants to leave,” I continued, feeling the need to explain. “She’s hurt and angry, yes. But I don’t believe she’s ready to give up on wa When I mentioned the South earlier, she hesitated. It felt like she was finally calming down, maybe even coming to terms with… everything. Then this happened.”
Lucian shook his head, his expression torn. “Let’s not get our hopes up, Maxwell. Maybe you were just imagining what she was feeling, hoping for a sign Just because she doesn’t want Keith doesn’t mean she’s not finished with us. She’s been through enough. More than enough.”
He was right. Scarlett had suffered more than anyone should have to bear, and if I was wrong, if my perception of her reluctance had just been wishful thinking, then letting ourselves believe she’d stay would only lead to more heartbreak. But as I looked at her, vulnerable yet radiant with the strange mag that seemed to pulse from within, I couldn’t ignore the pull, the lingering hope that maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t ready to leave us behind.
“Lucian…” Scarlett murmured in her sleep, her voice laced with distress. She was caught in a nightmare, that much was clear Tears slipped down of her eyes even as her eyes remained closed, and my chest tightened at the sight. Whatever she was experiencing in her mind, it was tearing her past
“Please… no… no…” Her voice was faint, pained, each word sounding like it was pulled from the depths of some dark memory. I could inb image what
was going through.
“Call Elsa, Clay,” I said, desperation sharpening my tone. “Tell her to hurry back. We can’t let her go through this for much buger Phe teeling helplessness gnawed at me, a knot of anxiety twisting tighter with every passing moment.
Scarlett’s face softened slightly, her lips forming the faintest shape of my name. “Maxwell, please don’t.. she whispered, le vole caten editie bet surged through me whatever she was facing was consuming her completely.
