Chapter 167
The angry blare of an alarm pulled me from sleep, followed by a series of groans. My arm ached from being held in the same position all night tied to Caspian’s.
“Someone turn that fucking thing off,” Vaughn harked from the end of the bed,
Anson felt around for my phone and finally shut off the sound..
“What time is it?” Knox mumbled.
River rubbed at his eyes. “It isn’t even light out.”
I loosened the tie on my wrist and slid towards the end of the bed, careful to avoid Vaughn. “Go back to sleep.”
All of the guys‘ eyes came to me.
Caspian sat up. “Where are you going?”
“For a run.”
Anson moaned but got to his feet. “I’m coming.”
I almost laughed at the pout on his face.
Knox scrubbed a hand over his face. “And why are you going for a run before it’s light out?”
The humor I’d felt at Anson’s sulking fled at Knox’s question. “We’re running out of time. Mason said we have to go back to school today, so it’s now and after classes. I need to make use of the windows I have.”
His jaw tightened, but he slid towards the end of the mattress. “We’ll all go.”
“You don’t have to-”
“Together,” River cut me off. “You train, we train. The physical workouts will help us too. The empath who told me how to work at breaking through shields says it helps.”
I straightened, ears perking up at that. I’d never asked how River had been able to reach me while I was being held by Kaleb. “Who taught you?”
Wariness filled Knox’s expression. “An old, crazy shifter.”
“She’s not crazy,” River defended.
Knox arched a brow.
River flushed. “Okay, she’s a little eccentric, but what she said was true.” He turned back to me. “She told us to link our powers and hold an image of you in our minds. It took everything we had, but I could reach you in small bursts and eventually help you connect to Knox.”
An image of them exhausted and scared out of their minds filled my thoughts. I crossed to River, throwing my arms around him. “Thank you.”
He nuzzled my neck. “We’ll fight with everything we have for you.”
I knew it was the truth. And it was what scared me most of all.
I stared at the brick building as Anson pulled into his parking spot. Classes, studying, and high school drama felt like another lifetime. One

where I wasn’t concerned about a sociopath of a bio dad and learning how to harness a power that could kill me..
Caspian’s thumb traced circles on my knee. “You okay?”
That wasn’t a word that felt like it applied to me. I was exhausted down to my bones. It was more than a physical exhaustion, though that was certainly a piece of it. We’d done a run to the gym down by the main lodge, a workout there, then shifted to run back home in our wolf forms.
My wolf stirred inside me at the memory. She loved running with her mates, feeling the freedom of finally stretching her legs after the drugs Kaleb had given us had kept her suppressed. As much as that time had fed my soul, it had taken it out of me. It would take time to build up the endurance I’d need.
Caspian squeezed my thigh. “Sen?“.
“I’m good. What excuse did Mason give them this time?”
Knox shifted in the front seat so he was facing me. “Death in the community.”
