Control your gift,” Gregor barked.
met his gaze and didn’t look away. “Why?”
If you lash out against us, the only thing that will greet you is death. And what a waste that would be.”
he rage that blossomed somewhere deep inside only fueled that pool of energy. Instead of living in my center, it spread out into all my limbs.
Shit.” Anson muttered.
glanced down to see sparks swirling all around me. They swarmed me like little lightning bugs. Dozens of them broke off, surrounding my bond as well. I had o idea what it meant, but I knew that one wrong move could make that power detonate.
reathe. Vaughn’s voice swirled about in my head. Breathe with me. In and out. Focus on me.
could feel him there. Inside me. Inside my mind and inside my soul. I latched on to him. He knew better than most the dangers of losing control. I let his
resence calm me and slowly the sparks faded into my skin.
hank you, I told him as I let out a breath.
regor brushed invisible lint off his shirt sleeve. “The decision has been made. Mason, you will come with us by choice or by force.”
No-” Mac began, but Mason clamped a hand on his shoulder, silencing him.
I come by choice, choosing to believe that the Quad will see the truth in this trial.” He turned in our direction. “I leave willingly and I bestow Alpha status on
ny son, Knox.”
Mason strode towards us. He gripped the back of Knox’s neck and brought their foreheads together. A surge of energy filled the room. “I believe in you. Lead trong. Lead true.”
nox’s eyes glistened as he met his father’s gaze. “I’ll make you proud.”
eyed the table of shifters through the open kitchen doors. Heads bowed over journals and pack histories, desperately searching for any precedent that would elp Mason. The pack was on edge. Mason had sent out a calming message through our link before he was taken, but it could only do so much. Now that weight
ested on Knox’s shoulders.
My chest tightened as I took in the strain around his eyes and mouth. He never thought he’d be taking over the role of alpha so soon. Let alone in such a
urbulent time.
le pointed something out in one of the books to Ivan and the table began discussing it. I forced myself to turn away, back to the task at hand. I layered deli meat n bread as Anson followed behind me with cheese. My eyes stung as I forced my tears down.
nson stilled, dropping the slices of cheese. “Hey, what’s going on?”
le turned me so that I was facing him, pulling the turkey from my hand and placing it on the cutting board. His hands slid along my neck, forcing my gaze to
iis. “Talk to me.”
gave my head a small shake. “It’s not important.”
You being upset will always be important.”
let out a huff of air. My emotions weren’t what mattered. Not when Mason was in a cell somewhere, and Kaleb was pulling strings that could end us all. “I want to help.” And right now, I felt powerless.
Anson’s expression gentled. “We are helping.”
“Making sandwiches for people who probably don’t even want them feels like a pathetic form of help.”
Anson’s fingers trailed along my neck in soothing strokes. “We haven’t been in this world as long as the rest of them. They know the ms and outs in a way we

don’t. So we find a way to be useful. Making sandwiches may not seem like a lot, but it shows them we care.”
I let my head fall to his chest. “You’re right.” I turned my head so that I could see the table but wouldn’t lose contact with Anson. “I’m worried about Knox.”
Anson’s arms wrapped around me. “Me too. He’s going to need you.”
He’s going to need all of us.”
That’s true, but he’ll need you especially. You balance him, help tether him to the here and now. But you’re also his safe place to let everything go at the end of ach day. He’ll need that more than ever.”
t was a beautiful thing, the ebb and flow of our bond. That Anson would make sure that his bond mate had what he needed, would help me give it to him. Yet ny stomach twisted with nerves. Fear that I wouldn’t be enough for Knox in such a pivotal moment.
Anson squeezed me harder, seeming to read my thoughts. “You’re everything he needs just as you are,”
let out a shuddering breath and then kissed the spot over Anson’s heart. “Love you.”
He kissed the top of my head. “Love you too.”

We got back to work and made the best damn sandwiches possible. Turkey and cheese, salami, even good ole peanut butter and jelly. I poured chips into bowls, and Anson gathered sodas and waters for everyone.
We arranged a buffet of sorts on the table next to everyone, but they didn’t even notice. I crossed behind Knox and slid my hands over his shoulders. “We have food for everyone. You can work while you eat or-”
Ivan shook his head. “No, a break would be good. We can go over some of what we’ve read and share information. We’ll hit the books better with food in our bellies.” He gave me a kind smile. “Thank you, Senna.”
“Anson helped too.”
He turned to Anson. “Thank you too.”
1 might not know all the ins and outs of shifter history and law, but I make a killer sandwich.”
River stood and clapped Anson on the back. “I’m damn grateful for that, brother.”
Knox stood, bending to kiss my temple. “Thank you, Sen.”
“Are you holding up okay?”
He nodded, but nothing about his expression told me that was the truth.
I’m here. Whatever you need, okay?”
