Chapter 34
The voices sounded far away, like through a tunnel.
“See, she’s coming around now. You can calm down and take a breath.”
“Senna? Can you hear me? Are you okay?”
The second voice, I recognized. Anson. A hand slipped into mine, warm and comforting. My eyes fluttered open, light breaking through. I groaned as the room came into focus. “What happened?”
The woman, who I assumed was a nurse, patted my leg. “You had a little fainting spell after your tumble. Did you have breakfast this morning?”
“I, uh, a half a bagel, I think.” I might not have even gotten that far. I’d been distracted by the revelation that Vaughn was Caspian’s brother, and the scene with Anson and Sadie in the parking lot.
The nurse made a tsking sound. “That’s not nearly enough for a growing girl. Have some of this juice, and you’ll be feeling right as rain again.”
She bent to hand me the juice, but Anson positioned himself between us, taking the orange juice from her. The nurse raised a brow and then just shook her head, going back to her desk across from the little exam table.
“Here, want to sit up?”
“Yeah.”
Anson’s hand tightened around mine, pulling me to a sitting position. The room was a little wobbly for a moment and then everything straightened out.
“How did I get here?”
The nurse snorted. “Your knight in shining armor carried you. I thought he was going to tear the school down if you didn’t wake up soon.”
“Here, drink some of this.” Anson placed the juice in my hand.
“You carried me all the way from the gym?”
He rolled his eyes. “You’re not exactly heavy.”
“I’m tall.” Five–foot–eight wasn’t exactly short.
“Not as tall as me.”
“You’re a giant.” Actually, all the guys I’d befriended were taller. Significantly taller than most of the school’s population.
“Drink,” Anson said sternly.

“Yeah, yeah.” I took a sip, and the sweet orange taste exploded on my tongue. I didn’t think juice had ever tasted this good.
When I emptied the small bottle, Anson took it from me. “How does your arm feel?”
I lifted and bent it, wincing. “I think I’ll have a few bruises, but no broken bones.”
“Jasmine is such a bitch.”
“Language,” the nurse warned.
A muscle in Anson’s cheek ticked. “She should’ve been suspended. At least Coach gave her detention for a week.”
I let my head drop. Awesome. Now Jasmine would surely have it out for me even more.
A bell rang and the nurse looked at the clock. “That’s lunch. If you feel up for it, why don’t you get changed and get something to eat. If you’re still feeling unsteady on your feet, I can have Anson go get you something.”
There was a part of me that would’ve liked to stay in the nurse’s office all day. Maybe she’d let me stay all year. I could do all my classwork in here and never have to deal with another student. Instead, I pushed to my feet. Better to get it over with now.
Anson held out both hands as if to spot me. My mouth twitched. “I’m not going to pass out on you again.”
“Better safe than sorry.” He bent, picking up my gym bag. “Here. Coach had Ginger bring it for you.”
“Thanks.” I went into the bathroom and locked the door behind me. I set the bag on a small table in the corner. As I changed, I realized it was more than just my arm hurting. My entire body ached and my lower back twinged. Tonight called for a long soak in an Epsom salt bath.
Placing my gym clothes back in the bag, I zipped it up and opened the door. Anson was two steps outside the door.
“Everything okay?”
A laugh sputtered out of me. “I didn’t lose a limb in battle. I’m fine.”
That tic was back in his cheek. “You took a hard fall.”
I patted his chest. “Let’s go get some food. I think you might be falling into some weird hunger induced, worry state.”
The nurse rose, handing me a small cup. “Two ibuprofen. Take these after you’ve eaten. Come back if anything starts hurting
more.”
“Thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“Any time, dear.” She patted my shoulder in a grandmotherly way. “Now, shoo, the both of you. My soap is on.”
I giggled and started for the door. Anson took my bag off my shoulder. “I’ve got this.”
“Uh, thanks.”
We walked down the empty hallway, everyone else having already made their way to the cafeteria.

“So,” he began. “Sit with me at lunch today?”
My mouth opened, closed, and opened again. “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. Sadie and the bitch squad aren’t my
favorite.”
“Then we’ll sit at another table.”
“I’m sure we could sit with Knox, River, and Caspian.”
Anson’s hold on my bag tightened. “We don’t get along all that well.”
“Why is that?”
“It’s a long story. Lots of history there.”
I made a humming sound. I wouldn’t push, but I was more than a little curious.
Anson held the door open for me, and I stepped through. It was just like when Knox had walked me to his table. All the conversations seemed to mute as gazes turned towards us.
“Why couldn’t you be a raging geek?” I mumbled.
“What?” he asked, humor lacing his tone.
“You have to be some hot shit lacrosse player who everyone is obsessed with. Now people are staring.”
His hand pressed into the small of my back, guiding me forward. It should’ve hurt since the muscles there were throbbing, but instead, the contact seemed to ease the worst of the pain. “Come on, we can sit in the back.”
