Lavender nail polish covered the fingernails in a way I’d never been able to master. “I can come study too,” Sadle purred.

Anson shrugged her hand off. “Sorry, Sadie. Not today.”

Did that mean another day the invitation would be open?

“Anson, we have a history project too, you know. We should start on that.”

My stomach churned at the thought of Anson and Sadie alone together, at all the times they’d been alone together before.

“Sadie,” Anson said in a low voice. “Don’t make me do this.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Sadie’s shrill tone cut through the air. “You don’t sit with us at lunch, and now you’re inviting her over instead of your real friends?”

Anson’s eyes hardened into glinting emeralds. “You think you’re my real friend? You’re the furthest thing from that. You’re user, Sadie. You want my money, the status that comes from being attached to me, but you don’t know the first thing about

me.”

“And she does?” Sadie shrieked.

“All it took was ten minutes, and she knew me better than you ever will.”

River grabbed my backpack from my shoulder, replacing it with his arm. “You weren’t trying to give us the slip, were you?”

That warm buzz of energy that always signaled River‘ nearness slid over me. I did my best not to sigh with contentment. “Running would be useless, you’d just find me.”

He barked out a laugh. “You make us sound like stalkers.”

I tilted my head back, raising a brow. “Let’s be honest, you guys are a little stalkerish.”

He pulled me in closer. “But you like us that way.”

“You are kind of adorable.”

River groaned. “Adorable? The kiss of death.”

Caspian fell into step beside us. “What’s the kiss of death?”

“Being called adorable,” River answered.

“Ro called you adorable? You’re screwed, man.”

Ro.There was that nickname again. And just like with Knox, it warmed something in me to hear it again.

River gave Caspian a little shove. “She called us all adorable, so we’re all screwed.”

I shook my head as River opened one of the doors leading out of the school. “Adorable is a compliment.”

“Adorable is a compliment for puppies and babies,” Caspian argued.

“Exactly,” River agreed.

“So you’d rather I call you assholes?”

“It’d be better than adorable,” River muttered.

Caspian shot me a grin. “I’d prefer ruggedly handsome.”

I snorted. “So noted.”

As we approached the parking lot, I saw Anson and Knox in a heated discussion. Crap.I picked up my pace, raising my voice to cover the space, “Hey, guys.”

They turned to face me, both masking the earlier tension with smiles. Anson moved to the passenger side of his Range Rover, opening the door. “Ride with me, Senna.”

I stole a quick glance at Knox, whose smile had turned into a glare. “Sure.”

“I’ll ride with you too,” Caspian offered. “Always wanted to check out the Rover.”

Anson’s smile thinned, but he nodded. We all climbed into our respective vehicles, and Anson backed out of his parking spot. “How was the rest of your day? Did Jasmine give you any more trouble?”

I twisted the end of my bracelet around my finger. “No Jasmine or Sadie run–ins.” I hadn’t even seen Jasmine at all.

Anson adjusted his grip on the steering wheel as he pulled into traffic. “I’m sorry Sadie set her sights on you because of me. I never thought about…”

“How your bed buddies might inflict hell on Senna?” Caspian offered helpfully from the back seat.

I couldn’t help it, the laughter bubbled out of me.

Anson sent Caspian a glare. “I didn’t know she’d go all psycho on me.”

“But you did know she was a bitch. Not sure what that says about your taste, man.”

I held up a hand. “All right. I think we’ve all had lapses in judgment when it comes to romantic partners. Let’s just move on.”

Two sets of eyes turned to me.

“What kind of lapses in judgment have you had?” Anson asked, his voice a low growl.

I pulled the cord tighter around my finger. “Dating someone who it turns out didn’t give a shit about me.” I’d given Jason so many firsts, and it burned that those gifts had meant nothing to him at all.

“He’s an idiot,” Caspian muttered.
