Chapter 62
I focused on the four that felt closer. There was a sort of energy that flowed between all of us. One strand pulsed, and as I zeroed in on it, I could feel the red heat of pain, a mirror of the slice in my own palm. My hands tingled as I thought about the flesh knitting back together, of pushing a golden light into Anson.
After a moment, hands landed on my shoulders. “That’s enough, Ro.”
Knox’s voice brought me out of my trance, and I realized he was now standing behind me.
My gaze flashed to Anson. “Did it work?”
He pulled his hand slowly out from between mine, lifting it up for all of us to see. There was nothing there. No scar or evidence it had ever been injured.
“I can’t believe it,” Mason said quietly. “That kind of healing before she’s even shifted?” He turned his focus to me, almost a little wariness there.
Knox dug his thumbs into my shoulders, massaging. “She’s amazing.”
Caspian’s hand wrapped around my thigh. “She really is.”
“H–how?”
“I can’t answer that,” Mason said thoughtfully. “But it would help to know who your birth parents are.”
“Are gifts like these passed down?”
Mason nodded. “They can be. Sometimes they’re a melding of the two, manifesting in a different way. Other times, gifts can skip a generation or disappear altogether. Knox and I both have control as our gift.”
“My adoption was sealed, so I don’t know how we’d find out who my parents are.”
“We have ways,” Mason assured me.
My breaths started coming faster. I wasn’t sure I was ready for that. Being faced with people who were so willing to throw me away. I already had one family that had cast me aside, I didn’t need the reminder of a second.
Knox’s hands continued to dig into my shoulders, soothing away the worst of the tension there. “Dad, give her time. This is a
lot.”
Mason’s eyes took on a hard glint. “Knox…”
His name was a warning, and Knox’s hands dropped from my shoulders. “I know you’re alpha. I respect that, but Senna’s my.” His words cut off for a moment. “She’s my friend. I know what she’s been through these past few months, and we just dropped a whole other life on her. You need to back off.”
There was a slight vibration to the last of Knox’s words. Mason’s jaw tightened, but he inclined his head towards his son. “I’ll

give her some time, but not too long.”
My shoulders slumped in relief just as my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, scanning the screen.
Mom: Where are you? You should’ve been home hours ago. Did you forget you’re grounded?
Crap.
Me: I’m working on a group project for school.
I nibbled on my thumbnail as I waited for a response. Anson slipped a hand under my hair, massaging my nape.
Mom: You didn’t get permission for that. Get home now.
I blew out a breath, fluttering the hair around my face. “I need to get home.”
The tension in the room ratcheted up as four sets of eyes bored into me.
“You are not going back there,” Anson growled.
“I have no choice. I’m seventeen. I have to do what she says.” My stomach twisted as my mother’s rage–filled face flashed in my mind. Maybe I could hole up in my room and barricade the door.
“What’s all this about?” Mason asked, voice gruff.
Knox glanced at me, and I sent him a pleading look. “Senna’s mom isn’t the greatest. She’s been pretty cruel to her since Senna’s sister died.”
Mason’s expression softened. “I’m so sorry. Grief has a way of bringing people low at times. If you need a place to stay-”
“Thank you, but I really do have to go home. Asking to stay here will just make things worse.”
Mason studied me carefully. “You’ll tell me if things get too bad? There are things we can do.”
Unless he had the ability to sober my mom up and snap her out of her hate–filled haze, or kidnap me, I wasn’t sure he could help. But I appreciated the offer. “Thank you.”
I looked to Anson. “Can you take me home?”
A muscle in his jaw ticked. “Sure.”
I knew it was the last thing he wanted to do, but I’d have to face the firing squad eventually.
