Chapter 39
The voice on the other end of the line changed, replaced by
Austin’s dejected tone.
“Dad.”
Killian took a deep breath, trying to sound calm. “Your mom is busy right now. She definitely can’t answer the phone.”
Austin asked, “How do you know?”
“She’s picking up golf balls at the course. She can’t look at her phone,” Killian said.
A moment of silence fell over the line, followed by Austin’s voice, dripping with disdain. “How embarrassing.”
Killian said, “Stop looking for your gear. Just go buy a new
set.”
“Okay.”
Austin suddenly remembered the skateboard Calista had given him a few days earlier. Gregory had said it was the Hermès of skateboards.

He was starting to regret giving it away.
The phone was passed back to Betty, who hesitated on the
line.
Killian’s head was throbbing. “If you have something to say, spit it out.”
Gathering her courage, Betty blurted everything out in one breath, “Mr. Frost, my husband’s mother broke her leg. I have to resign and go take care of her.”
Of course, this had to happen when things were already
chaotic.
Killian took another deep breath. “Then finish the month, and
I’ll send someone to take over.”
“Mr. Frost, she’s in the hospital. There’s no one else to look
after her. I have to leave tomorrow,” Betty said.
In front of everyone, Killian couldn’t afford to treat his staff
poorly.
He forced down his irritation and spoke coldly, “I’ll have Edward handle it. Settle your wages and go.”

“Okay!”
Hanging up the phone, Killian rubbed his temples.
Ever since Calista had left, he found himself worrying about trivial matters like maids resigning.
He even had to moonlight as a psychologist to counsel his teenage son.
All of this was Calista’s fault-her selfishness had caused it
all.
He raised his wine glass and spoke solemnly, “I apologize for the personal interruption. Calista resigned from the Frost
Group. If her resume lands on any of your desks…”
Everyone understood immediately.
“We get it. Don’t worry. If she applies here, I’ll reject her
outright.”
A sharp glint appeared in Bradley’s usually mild eyes.
He said coolly, “Mr. Frost, you were married to the woman. Are you not going to leave her any way to survive?” 3/6

Killian said, “Mr. Ferrer, you’re overreacting. My situation is different from yours. It’s just that Calista hasn’t worked a proper job in years. I’d hate for her to cause any losses for
you.”
Bradley lowered his eyes and let out a cold laugh.
But Killian was determined.
He was going to make Calista realize that without the Frost family, she couldn’t find a single job.
It was time she learned just how cruel the world could be.
Still, he wondered how she had survived these past few days.
Hotels cost money, and feeding two people cost money.
Could she really afford all that just by picking up balls for two days?

The next afternoon, Calista arrived at Hartwell Manor with
her daughter as promised.

New York, a neighborhood of elegant, old-world villas where Evander’s parents also lived.
Before going in, she snapped a photo of the house and sent it
to Evander.
[Thanks for the pep talk. I’m here.]
Evander replied almost instantly: [Only those who dare to face their past are truly strong.]
A faint smile appeared on Calista’s face as she read the
message.
His words of comfort were always so warm and perfectly
timed.
This time, Calista didn’t hesitate. She walked straight into the
villa.
Familiar with the layout, she led her daughter into the living
room.
Near the entrance, two pairs of matching pink slippers—one small, one large-were neatly arranged.

Changing into her slippers, Calista walked inside. The house was just as she remembered it, with many of the original
decorations still in place.
Even the family portrait sat in its old spot, the frame spotless,
clearly polished regularly.
Kyle descended the stairs, wearing a pair of matching blue
slippers.
He sauntered over to Calista and Olivia, eyeing the fruit in
Calista’s hand with a frown.
“Why buy all this stuff? No one eats it anyway.”
Despite his words, he instructed a maid to take it down and
wash it.
Looking around, Calista saw no signs of a birthday
celebration.
“Kyle, whose birthday is it today?” she asked.
