Chapter 38
Calista blinked, at a loss for words.
She’d completely forgotten about that unwritten rule of golf.
Whoever scored a hole-in-one was expected to hand out
cash prizes to every guest and staff member on the course
—including all the employees working that day, without
exception.
The total amount would easily add up to 200 thousand
dollars.
Calista was strapped for cash. She’d originally planned to slip her caddy a private bonus and ask him to keep the albatross under wraps-spend a little money to avoid a big
hassle.
But the caddies had been so excited that they’d spread the
news of her incredible shot all over the course in no time.
And who could blame them? It was the most spectacular
score the course had ever seen since it opened.
Just as Calista was feeling stuck, Hugh let out a hearty laugh2

“Nick, you sure know how to squeeze every last penny out of a deal, don’t you?”
“I’m selling you the hotel at a steal! The least you can do is
spread some joy and hand out bonuses to everyone!” Nick
retorted.
“Deal! Of course we’ll hand them out!” Hugh waved his
assistant over and told him to take care of the cash prizes immediately.
Mood thoroughly lifted, he turned to Calista and gestured for
her to come over.
They walked over to the bench, where Hugh sat down first.
Calista, afraid of annoying him further, hesitated to take a
seat beside him.
“You said you wanted to talk to me, didn’t you? Why are you
standing there like a statue? I’m not a mind reader-I can’t
hear what you’re thinking,” Hugh said, breaking the silence.
Calista knew her father’s gruff manner well; he’d always spoken his mind this way.

you. Now that I know you’re in good health, I won’t bother you anymore.”
The faint trace of a smile that had appeared on Hugh’s face vanished instantly.
He glared at her, his mustache bristling with anger. “I’m perfectly fine as long as no one goes out of their way to irritate me! I don’t need your so-called concern!”
Calista sighed silently.
“Don’t push yourself to work when you’re under the weather anymore. Now that Killian and I are divorced, he’ll probably stop targeting the Hartwell family. You don’t have to wear
yourself out like this,” she said gently.
Hugh narrowed his eyes sharply.
“Hmph. Who’s to say the two of you aren’t in cahoots to trick
me?”
A hint of hurt and grievance flickered across Calista’s face as she bit her lower lip.
Her father’s misunderstanding ran deep.

No amount of explanation would undo the hurt that had been caused. All she could do was apologize.
“I’m sorry. You should rest now. I’ll take my leave.”
Calista feared that staying any longer would only make Hugh angrier.
For the sake of his health, she’d keep her distance and let their relationship mend slowly over time.
Watching her walk away, Hugh felt a surge of frustration and
anxiety, his face turning red with pent-up emotion. “Wait a
minute!”
He paused, clearing his throat awkwardly before continuing, “There’s a birthday banquet at the house tomorrow. Bring
Olivia and come.”
Calista frowned, confused. Besides her parents, Kyle, Mirea, and her two young nephews, there was no one else in the family whose birthday was coming up.
She couldn’t recall whose celebration it was.
“If you don’t want to come, then just send Olivia over!” Hugh added quickly, his tone softening slightly.

Calista nodded. It didn’t matter whose birthday it was-she
would go.

Back at the clubhouse, the staff members were buzzing with excitement as they collected their cash bonuses, chatting animatedly about the incredible hole-in-one from earlier that day.
Word of the feat eventually reached Killian and his group, leaving them all stunned.
“I can’t believe it! An albatross-only heard about it in
legends, and now we’ve actually met one!”
Someone called a waiter over and asked, curious, “Do you know who made that amazing shot?”
“Sir, it was a lady. She didn’t even warm up-just stepped up
and nailed it in one swing,” the waiter replied with a smile.
“A lady?” Nicole rested her chin in her hand, looking thoroughly unconvinced. “I’ve never heard of a woman playing golf that well. Must be bragging.”

The waiter chuckled, saying, “No chance of that. The course is covered in surveillance cameras-there’s no way she could have cheated.”
Harvey leaned forward, his curiosity piqued. “What did she look like? Was she attractive?”
“I’m not sure about that, sir. All I know is that the elderly gentleman with her was absolutely over the moon. The cash bonuses he handed out were extremely generous,” the waiter said.
Harvey stroked his chin, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
“Could she be a retired professional golfer? I’d love to meet her. Having someone with that kind of skill on my side could help me close a few big deals.”
Nicole’s competitive spirit flared at the thought.
“It’s just one lucky shot! What’s the big deal? She probably just got lucky.”
She shook Killian’s arm playfully. “Mr. Frost, I want to learn how to play golf too!”
Kilian usually indulged her trivial requests. “Austin’s golf

coach is excellent. I’ll have a word with him later.”

“Can I ask that lady who made the hole-in-one to be my
coach instead?” Nicole asked with a smirk. So what if she was
good at golf? She’d still end up working for people like them.
