Chapter 62
Early the next morning, Calista thought it over and decided to tell Olivia about Killian’s hospitalization.
“He only said that much before I hung up. I don’t know the details. Whether you want to call and check on him is
entirely up to you.”
She handed Olivia a glass of milk, speaking gently.
Since leaving the Frost family, her emotions had grown far more stable.
Stepping out of the confines of marriage had changed how she viewed many things.
She would not stop her daughter from seeing her biological father, nor would she poison her child with complaints about how terrible he was.
Issues between parents should never be forced onto
innocent children.
And she had no right to make decisions for her daughter. Oligia had her own feelings too. She’d miss her dad and 37

need him sometimes.
No matter how bitter a divorce, parents still had to think about their child’s future.
There was no need to be ruthless.
Olivia took a large gulp of milk and rested her chin on her hand, pondering for a long while.
“Mom, aren’t you afraid I’ll be bribed by Dad and leave. you alone?”
Calista shook her head.
“You’re my daughter. Your feelings matter most. If being with him makes you happy, I won’t stop you. I’ll always be here for you, but I don’t need to be your only choice.
“He is biased, that’s true. But he raised you for sixteen years, that’s also true. Adult grudges shouldn’t involve children. So, Olivia, don’t worry about making me unhappy. Handle it however you want.”
Olivia raised her thumb. “Mom, divorcing him was the right choice. These past two years, you were gloomy and

worn down. Now you’re radiant and beautiful. I’m hooked for life.”
Calista laughed and poked her. “Such a sweet talker.”
“Well, I’m a total mama’s girl. So what?”
“Eat your breakfast, mama’s girl.”
After breakfast, Olivia still called Killian.
She figured that if she could get more money from her father, all the better.
If it wasn’t spent on his own daughter, it would end up on some other woman anyway. Why shouldn’t she try to get
more?
Killian was genuinely happy when he received Olivia’s call.
He hadn’t gone home all night, and Austin hadn’t even asked.
His daughter, at least, knew to care.

“It was food poisoning,” he explained. “The doctor says it was serious. I need to stay a few more days.”
Olivia did feel a wave of worry.
An absent father and a dead father were very different things.
“Dad, you have to be careful with food from now on. Don’t eat things of unknown origin.”
“Hmm.” Killian thought of the man from last night and tried to confirm something. “Olivia, about last night…”
“Dad, I’m out of time. I have to go to class. We’ll talk
later!”
Then, the line went dead.
Killian fell silent.
Both Olivia and Calista had learned to hang up on him.
Yet that call brought him clarity.
If Calista truly didn’t care at all, why would she have told 4/6

their daughter to call him?
Their marriage did mean something.
Calista still loved him.
Not many people knew about Killian’s hospitalization.
Killian’s mother, son, sister, and brother hadn’t come. Instead, someone unexpected showed up.
“Mr. Ferrer, please make yourself comfortable.”
Killian studied Bradley.
