Second Chance His Unending Love (Calista Hartwell) novel Chapter 72

Chapter 72

But Evander didn’t dare cross that line.

He sat there rigidly, trying not to look at her, but he

couldn’t control his body’s response. Evander’s Adam’s ́ apple bobbed.

“Did I hurt you?” Calista noticed his expression change and asked anxiously.

“No.” His voice came out rough and low.

“The wound isn’t too bad. The bleeding’s stopped already. Just don’t get it wet for the next few days or it might get infected.” Calista stepped back and started putting away

the iodine.

Evander stared at her, emotions swirling in his chest. “I’ve been in the line of fire for years, and this is the first time anyone’s bandaged my wounds this carefully.” His eyes lowered slightly, lashes casting faint shadows across

his face.

A pang of sympathy hit Calista out of nowhere. He must have been hurt so many times over the years. If it hadn’t9

been for her back then, he wouldn’t have had to leave the Hayes family and join the military…

“I’m sorry…”

Evander sighed, his burning gaze fixed on the woman before him. “I never wanted an apology from you.”

The heat in his eyes made Calista’s skin flush. She quickly gathered up the first aid kit and scrambled away from the couch area in a fluster. But her toe caught on the coffee table, and her whole body pitched backward without warning, falling straight into Evander’s arms!

The sudden drop made Calista cry out. “Move!”

With her weight, she’d definitely hurt him. But instead of dodging, Evander sat solid as a rock and reached out with both hands, catching her firmly.

Calista tumbled into a warm yet hard embrace. She ended up sitting right on his lap, and his long fingers settled at her waist, holding her tight against him.

This was the first time they’d ever been this close. The distance between them was basically zero. Their skin.

pressed together through thin fabric, and Calista could feel every defined line of his abs and chest, along with…

His heartbeat pounded faster and faster against her ear.

“S-sorry…” Calista stayed frozen in Evander’s arms, too nervous to move. She wasn’t some young girl anymore. His tense body and scorching temperature told her everything she needed to know in an instant.

What puzzled her was that Evander’s reflexes were clearly pretty quick, so why hadn’t he dodged Killian’s attack earlier?

Sweat dampened Evander’s palms at some point. He gazed quietly at the woman in his arms, his eyes growing

darker and more intense.

Tonight had already given him several moments where his mind wandered to places it shouldn’t.

“Evander, let go first.” Calista’s voice pulled him back to reality.

He quickly released her, and she let out a breath before practically fleeing from the couch area.

Olivia walked out with her phone and had no idea what just happened, but she could tell something felt off about the atmosphere between her mom and Evander. “Mr. Hayes, I already talked to my dad. He said this chess set is from tonight’s auction. Is that true?”

Evander cleared his throat and straightened up in his seat. He grabbed a throw pillow from the couch and placed it on his lap, then spoke calmly, “It’s true. I just came back from the auction and brought it straight to

you.”

“Oh my god, this chess set really cost ten million?”

“Yeah.” He nodded casually.

10 million dollars was just a number to him, completely

meaningless.

But to Olivia, that was huge. “Mr. Hayes, that’s insane! Our whole apartment only cost eight million dollars!” She kept muttering to herself, “There are thirty-two pieces total, which means each piece is worth over 300

thousand dollars!”

Stephanie and Killian both told her that leaving the Frost family would mean losing her comfortable life and suffering outside with Calista.

But her life now was far more luxurious than when she

lived with the Frosts.

During the Frost family’s peak years, Frost Group ranked in the nation’s top ten, so she’d seen plenty of nice things. and lived that affluent lifestyle.

But maybe because Killian grew up poor and knew what it was like to have no money, even after he became successful, he remained cautious about spending and kept a tight grip on finances.
