Chapter 71
Calista took a deep breath and turned her head, her voice cold. “What else am I supposed to do?”
Killian kept his patience, and even though he despised Evander right now, he still said, “I can take him to the hospital.”
Anything was better than Calista taking him home.
Evander waved him off. “Don’t trouble yourself. I still
want to live.”
The implication was clear. He was afraid Killian might kill
him.
Calista turned around, and her tone softened completely. “Evander, should I call the police?”
“Nah, don’t bother.”
Evander was being pretty generous.
Calling the cops would ruin the fun, and he was afraid Killian couldn’t handle the consequences.

He added, “I’m really fine. Just have security kick him out.”
“Okay.”
Calista helped Evander into the residential complex. When they passed the security booth, she had a quick word with the guard, and the security guard came out with his baton and told Killian he couldn’t park there and needed to leave immediately.
Killian watched the two of them walk away together, grinding his teeth. “I dropped something by the entrance. Help me pick it up and I’ll leave.”
He retrieved the pink-blue diamond and floored the accelerator, peeling out of Golden Crest Court.
Calista helped Evander back to the apartment.
Olivia had been happily playing with her new chess pieces, but when she saw Evander come back with blood all over his face, she nearly jumped out of her skin. “Mr. Hayes, what happened? How’d you get hurt?”

Calista pressed her lips together. “Your dad threw something at him. Olivia, you need to be more careful when you go out. Try not to let your dad see you. I’m worried he might lose his temper and do something to hurt you.”
Olivia clenched her little fists. “How could he do this?”
While Calista went to find the medical kit, Olivia grabbed her phone and called Killian.
When Killian saw his daughter’s call, he thought Calista had put her up to it, maybe to smooth things over.
He answered the call.
But his usually sweet and obedient daughter opened with an accusation instead. “Dad, that was way out of line! How could you throw something at Mom’s friend?”
Killian’s temples throbbed with pain. “I wasn’t trying to
hit him. He ran into it himself.”
“If you hadn’t thrown anything, why would he run into it? He’s not stupid enough to get himself hurt on purpose!” Olivia shot back, clearly upset.

“Olivia, I… I can’t explain this to you right now. Just trust me, that guy’s bad news. You and your mom need to stay away from him.”
That just made Olivia even angrier.
“Dad, Mr. Hayes is a good person. He only came by tonight to give me a gift. What did he even do to you? And besides, Mom’s divorced now. She’s free to do
whatever she wants, and you can’t interfere with her private life.”
Killian retorted, “I’m your father. How can you take his
side over mine?”
“Because you’re wrong! And anyway, you and Austin always took Nicole’s side over Mom’s before, didn’t you?”
Her words affected Killian deeply.
Had he really done that?
“That’s different! Nicole is innocent, and she doesn’t scheme!” Killian argued weakly.

Olivia let out a breath and said quietly, “Dad, you’re really disappointing me.”
Killian couldn’t say anything more. With both his wife.
and daughter misinterpreting everything, nothing he said would clear his name. He had no choice but to stick to the facts and present evidence.
“I saw the gift he gave you, Olivia, and I can guarantee that chess piece is a fake. He’s a con artist. The real sapphire chess piece was already bought by the Hayes family at auction for 10 million dollars. I saw it with my own eyes.”
Olivia gasped, “Wait, it’s that expensive?”
Killian continued, “Olivia, your mom just got divorced and she’s got money now. Anyone could dig around and find out about you two. There are tons of scammers out there who target divorced women specifically.
“Your mom’s been out of the workforce for so long, she’s gonna get conned out of everything if she’s not careful…”
Olivia cut him off. “No, that’s not what this is at all!”
