Chapter 76
Kyle shook his head with mock disappointment. “Not exciting enough. I was really hoping to see that poker face of yours change expression for once.”
Evander shook his head with a laugh. “One second you’re treating me like a brother, the next you wanna see me squirm?”
Kyle wasn’t just sharp-tongued but downright troublesome. He’d help someone when it mattered, then betray them when things were calm.
Kyle snorted, “We’re close, sure, but I’m warning you right now. You and my sister are past tense. If she doesn’t bring up old history, you don’t either. Got it?”
“I don’t agree.” Evander’s expression turned serious. “She and I aren’t past tense.” They were present tense and future tense too. Twenty years of regret, and he’d make up for every bit of it going forward.
“Say whatever you want, but you’re not allowed to hurt my sister.”

Kyle’s tone softened as he scooted over and plopped down right next to Evander, pressing close. “I’m begging you as a friend. She’s had it rough these years. Do me a favor and don’t make things hard for her.”
It was rare to see Kyle this humble. Evander’s lips twitched slightly as he nodded with a touch of pride. “Alright.”
There probably wouldn’t be another time Kyle would beg him for anything.
Around noon, Hugh and Mirea both came back from work. When Hugh saw the vase, he lit up with such joy that he couldn’t stop grinning.
But then he spotted Evander and Calista together, and his heart twisted with conflict. He didn’t know whether to smile or kick him out.
At the dining table, everyone sat down to eat.
Elena didn’t say much and just kept piling food onto Calista’s plate, terrified that Calista might be in a bad mood and lose her appetite.

Hugh and Kyle took charge of keeping the conversation going, and they even broke out an expensive wine they never usually touched. The two of them were planning to get Evander completely drunk.
Basically, they weren’t giving Evander and Calista any chance to talk.
Calista was helpless.
Just then, her phone screen suddenly lit up. A message
came in.
The contact name read Evander.
Elena sat right next to Calista and noticed the screen light up. “Who is it? Texting during lunch?”
She was just asking casually. But Calista’s hand trembled as she picked up her fork, and she quickly grabbed her phone.
When she unlocked the screen, she stole a quick glance at Evander sitting across from her. She opened the message.
Evander sent-plus an emoji along with it: [Calista, save 40

me.]
Calista stared at that pitiful little emoji, then looked up to see Evander sitting there all serious and proper. His handsome face was faintly flushed, and it was obvious. Hugh and Kyle had already forced several glasses of wine on him.
They were clearly gearing up to pour even more down his
throat.
Calista put her phone under the table and typed out a
message.
[Are you okay? How do I save you?]
Across from her, Hugh raised his glass. “Evander, this drink is to thank you for the vase. I really appreciate you thinking of me all this time.”
Then Evander’s phone dinged.
Hugh voiced the same confusion Elena had earlier.
“Who’s texting in the middle of lunch? Can’t they give us a break?”

Calista ducked her head guiltily. Evander took the chance to open his phone, and his lips curved into a small smile.
Evander: [Tell my “in-laws” to stop making me drink.]
Calista’s phone dinged again.
Mirea didn’t know what was going on, but she laughed and teased, “Calista, you and Mr. Hayes must be connected somehow. Your phones are going off at the
same time.”
Calista stared at the word “in-laws”, and her heart started pounding while heat flooded her cheeks. She felt as guilty as a student caught texting in class.
Evander had to be drunk already and talking nonsense.
Calista set down her phone and cleared her throat. “Dad, Kyle, you guys should drink less.”
Hugh waved her off. “Calista, you don’t get it!”
If Evander got drunk, he wouldn’t have the energy to make things difficult for Calista.

Calista sighed helplessly, “Dad, Evander can’t hold his liquor. If you keep forcing drinks on him like this, he’s gonna feel awful.”
Hugh and Kyle both froze in confusion. While they tried to figure out what Calista meant by that, Evander seized the opportunity to stand up and stagger toward the bathroom.
Kyle immediately stepped forward. “I’ll help you.”
