Chapter 77
In the bathroom, Calista helped Evander over to the sink and gently patted his back like she was soothing a child. “Go ahead and throw up. You’ll feel better once you get it out.”
The haziness in Evander’s eyes suddenly cleared and sharpened. He turned around and grabbed Calista’s wrist, then in one smooth motion, pinned her against the sink.
His deep, intense gaze locked onto Calista’s face.
“Evander?”
His overwhelming masculine presence wrapped around her without warning.
Calista had the sink right behind her with nowhere to retreat, so she could only stand there trapped in his arms.
She glanced toward the door, and her heart nearly leapt out of her throat. She was so nervous she didn’t dare make a sound, so she kept her voice low and asked, “What’s wrong? Did you drink too much?”

“A little.”
Evander nodded, then let his head rest against her shoulder. His hands gripped her wrists as he leaned there quietly.
Calista felt pretty guilty about the whole thing. If it wasn’t for her, Evander wouldn’t have gotten himself drunk. “Does your head hurt? I’ll go make you some hangover
soup…”
She tried to pull away, but her strength was nothing compared to a man who’d been forged in the military. His tall frame didn’t budge an inch.
Calista had no choice but to stay put. Evander rested his head on her shoulder, and after a long silence, he let out a helpless sigh. “Calista, what hurts is… when are you ever gonna really see me?”
That question hit her like a light tap straight to the heart. Not hard, but enough to shake something loose inside. her.
She saw everything he did for her, all his patience, all of it. She saw it and remembered every bit. But she’d messed 275

up so badly back then. What right did she have now to stand beside him?
“You’ve had too much to drink. Go rest for a bit.”
Her deflection made Evander realize she still hadn’t gotten past whatever was holding her back. He slowly released her hand.
Calista quickly escaped from his embrace. “Um… I’ll go make some hangover soup for you.”
Evander didn’t want her going to all that trouble. “It’s fine, I didn’t drink that much. I’ll just sleep it off.”
Calista nodded. “Okay, I’ll head out then.”
Watching her hurry away like she was fleeing, Evander rubbed his temples. Sometimes, he really wanted to ask Killian how the hell Killian had won Calista’s heart in the first place.
When Calista returned to the dining table, she saw her whole family giving her those “spill it” looks, and she knew immediately that Olivia had told them everything.

Calista could only explain, “We just ran into each other by chance. We’re friends now, that’s all.”
Elena pressed hopefully, “Just… just friends?”
“Yeah, just friends.”
Elena could see there was no point pushing further. After all, Calista had only just gotten divorced and hadn’t even come out from under the shadow of her last marriage yet. Expecting her to jump into a new relationship this fast was unrealistic.
After lunch, Elena remembered the invitation the Ferrer family had sent over and asked Olivia, “Olivia, the Ferrer family is hosting a youth chess tournament. Are you
interested?”
Olivia perked up immediately and grabbed the invitation to look it over carefully. “The Ferrer family? Mom, is that the same family as Madam Ferrer who helped me out
before?”
Calista looked it over carefully and nodded. “Yeah, I think
so.”
