Second Chance His Unending Love (Calista Hartwell) novel Chapter 85

Chapter 85

Kristen watched Byron return to the bedroom and change into a fresh set of clothes. “You’re going out?”

Byron calmly hummed in agreement and strolled out

the door with his hands clasped behind his back. He walked along the quiet, tree-lined streets until he reached Stillwater Bay Park.

This was the residential area’s recreational spot for villa owners, a charming little park with all the amenities.

Byron walked over to the pavilion where several men in their sixties and seventies had gathered. Two of them sat across from each other, deeply engrossed in a game of

chess.

Everyone looked shocked when Byron showed up. Byron and Kristen were always so busy that residents rarely ran into them around the villa complex, let alone in the park.

Someone greeted him warmly. “Byron, what’s gotten into you? Since when do you go out for walks?”

Byron smiled and waved back. “Yeah, my son came 15:43

home.”

The other man froze. He had not asked about Byron’s son. “Wanna play a round?”

They invited him to join their chess game, but Byron waved them off. “Can’t. My son’s busy chasing after his girlfriend.”

The old men exchanged glances with varying expressions. Had Byron gone deaf? Or were they the crazy ones?

Why couldn’t anyone understand what he was saying anymore? In the end, they all looked at Byron with sympathy and shook their heads. Byron must be getting on in years and losing his hearing.

Finally, one of the old men caught on. “Byron, your son’s had a change of heart?”

Byron felt satisfied. At last, someone asked him the right question. He turned around with a beaming smile and spotted Hugh walking over with a big yellow dog on a

leash.

Hugh’s usually stern face carried a hint of joy. “Evander44

really has good news?”

Byron could barely keep the grin off his face when he saw his old friend, but he stayed composed and just hummed in acknowledgment. “I’m about to become a grandfather

too.”

Hugh clicked his tongue. “Already? Evander’s got a kid now? That boy, seriously! Why didn’t he mention this at lunch?”

“Huh?” Byron’s smile stiffened. “He went to your place. for lunch?”

“Yeah, didn’t he stop by your house?” Hugh asked.

“Hmph! He only just got back this afternoon. I haven’t seen him in half a year!” Byron huffed.

Hugh went quiet. Turned out he’d seen Evander way more times than Byron had, and Byron was Evander’s

actual father.

Every time Evander took leave, he’d show up at the Hartwell Manor with gifts. Whether he had business there or not, he’d visit. 378

Just this past month alone, they’d met three times. The Hartwell Manor and the Hayes Manor were so close by, so Hugh had assumed…

“Hey, Evander only stayed at my place for a bit before leaving. But tell me more about him. Does he really have a kid already?”

Byron waved his hands quickly. “Not quite that fast, but Evander’s always careful with his words. When he said we’d soon be grandparents, it must already be in the

works.”

Hugh saw how happy Byron was and felt genuinely pleased for him. This was great.

The burden Byron had carried in his heart for twenty years could finally be lifted. Ever since Evander left the Hartwell Manor at noon, Hugh had felt uneasy.

He and his wife both thought Evander must resent and blame Calista. They’d even prepared themselves to reduce contact with Evander for their daughter’s sake.

Who knew that not only did Evander not accuse Calista,

but he even helped her get divorced?

The whole family had been puzzling over it and couldn’t figure out what was going on.

But everything made sense now.

Evander must have found someone he loved, which

helped him let go of past grievances and make peace with

Calista.

This was truly a happy ending for everyone. The Hartwell family didn’t need to cut ties with the Hayes family, and Calista wouldn’t have to walk on eggshells around Evander anymore, trying to please him.

Hugh chimed in, “Who knows, maybe one day Evander will surprise you and just show up with a grandson or granddaughter in his arms.”

At those words, Byron’s mind filled with vivid images. He couldn’t hold back his grin anymore and burst out laughing.

“Hugh, I won’t have to envy you anymore. Just you wait, you’ll be the one envying me. My future grandkids might 578

end up as valedictorians, and whether they’re going to grad school or studying abroad, we will back them all the way!” Byron was clearly picking a fight with Hugh’s earlier comments.

Hugh nodded in defeat. “Fine, fine, I won’t argue with you. My granddaughter’s already a top student anyway. She got snatched up by the Yale Scholars Program teachers, and her future’s limitless!”

“Well, my grandkids will get into the Yale Scholars Program too!”

“You don’t even have grandkids yet, dude. Do you even know what a Yale Scholars Program is?”

“Hmph! Whatever your family has, mine won’t be any

worse!”

Hugh and Byron had started out chatting happily, but within minutes they’d descended into competitive bickering, their voices getting louder and louder. Yellow, Byron’s dog, spun in anxious circles on the ground and let out a couple of barks.

Hugh chuckled, “Look at you being all fierce. Just make
