When Ned heard that Angeline was also present, he pulled his hands out of his pockets, and his eyes flickered.
Sherryn's face fell. "Angeline is truly something. She made Sean take her to Mr. Lawson Senior's birthday banquet."
"It seems that Mr. Lawson Senior was the one who asked her to come." Zachary frowned and rebutted her. "Besides, Mr. Lawson Senior seems to like Angeline very much."
Sherryn was stunned. She gripped her purse tightly and gritted her teeth. "How did she manage to play up to him so fast? She is efficient!"
"Mom!" Ned was angry. "Angeline isn't like that! I don't like it when you make such comments about her. If you say another word—"
"Ned!" Zachary saw the security looking in their direction, so he hurriedly pulled Ned back. "Mrs. Fletcher, you should mind your words. This place is full of the Lawson family's people. If Mr. Lawson Senior finds out, he won't forgive Fletcher Corporation easily."
Sherryn felt embarrassed, for her son had talked back to her. She was startled by Zachary's words.
Adjusting her shawl, she said, "What are you guys thinking about? I was saying that Angeline is capable, and she's made Mr. Lawson Senior adore her so much. I didn't say anything else!"
"Ned, control yourself in there. Don't go looking for Angeline. If we mess things up, I won't know how to explain it to my dad," Zachary warned.
Ned's fists clenched tightly.
He desperately wanted to see Angeline and felt like he was losing his mind.
When he closed his eyes, his mind would be full of her. All he wanted was to kneel in front of her and hold on to her legs to beg for her forgiveness.
Therefore, before the deadline that he had promised Ingrid, he would remind himself to stay away from Angeline. That would prevent her from being hurt by the rumors.
Ned's mother couldn't help feeling furious when she saw how loyal her son was to Angeline. She smiled and said to Zachary, "Zachary, let's go in!"
Zachary inclined his head and brought them into the banquet hall. Robert was already on the stage, and he was giving a speech.
The three of them took their seats at the back and watched Robert. Naturally, they could also see Angeline, who sat at the main table and leaned over intently to one of the directors of Lawson Global as they talked with each other.
Ned's Adam's apple bobbed. For some reason, the scene before him made him think of the time when their high school held a coming-of-age ceremony for them.
At the time, the principal had made Angeline sit at the main table. As soon as she had finished her speech, she had come to sit with Ned. When he gave her a surprised look, she said, "We should be there for each other on every important day."
