Laurence was the only surviving descendant of the legitimate head of the family. Rumors about Tony’s past actions were everywhere. Everyone knew that the former head and his entire family had been murdered. Now that the rightful heir had finally taken over, Tony's family was trembling in fear.
The buyers were taking advantage of the situation too. They knew Manny had no choice but to pay whatever price they demanded if he wanted the antiques back.
After sneaking out, Manny went straight to the first person to whom he had sold an antique years ago. When the buyer demanded three times the original price, Manny called his father to report the amount. Tony's mood was completely ruined, and he barely touched his dinner.
Now, he sat alone in his study, sitting in a black swivel chair and smoking one cigarette after another. The room was thick with the smell of tobacco.
A knock sounded at the door.
Tony remained silent for a long time before finally getting up to answer it. Susan stood outside.
When they were young, the couple shared a good relationship. However, after Tony seized part of the family's power and became the acting head, he let success go to his head. He started having many affairs, and their marriage fell apart. However, they never divorced.
There were two reasons for that. First, Susan's family was powerful enough that he could not afford to fall out with them completely. Second, she had stood by him throughout the years and knew too much of his secrets. They also had several children together, including Manny, who was his successor.
Thus, they remained married and continued living their separate lives. Tony could keep as many mistresses as he wanted, and Susan never interfered. Her only condition was that he was not allowed to father sons with other women.
Even when a mistress was particularly obedient and genuinely loved him, Tony would have someone test her blood to determine the baby's sex as soon as she became pregnant. He would allow her to give birth if the baby was a girl, but more often than not, he forced them to get abortions.
Refusing to have sons with other women, not getting divorced, and raising Manny as his heir was his way of preserving Susan's dignity.
As he grew older and retired to live at home, his wandering heart finally settled down. He stopped chasing women, and his relationship with Susan improved.
