Chapter 45

Tonight, Calvin was relentless, almost furious, leaving several bite and bruise marks on her waist.

Eliza didn’t hold back either, leaving plenty of marks on his neck.

He was losing control, getting even more unrestrained.

Eliza could only grip the bedsheet, her fingertips leaving behind messy wrinkles.

By the end, she was too exhausted to resist, closing her eyes and letting him have his way.

On Saturday morning, Eliza woke up early because she had to pick up Ottilie from the hospital.

The consequence of the indulgence from the night before was that, when she got up, her legs felt weak.

While brushing her teeth, Calvin entered the bathroom and naturally wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, “Come back to bed with me.”

Eliza ignored him, finishing her mouthwash before looking at the man in the mirror. She spoke slowly, “Just a breakup fling, what’s the point of all this -intimacy?”

Calvin, who had been feeling sluggish, suddenly snapped awake at her words.

He stared at her for several seconds with squinted eyes before asking, “Not pacified yet?”

So, was he only putting in that much effort last night to “pacify” her?

He was trying hard, but clearly in all the wrong places.

Eliza slowly pulled herself away from him, separating herself from his embrace. Her tone was calm, more so than ever before. “What pacifying? It’s just mutual benefit.”

Calvin’s eyes turned dangerously cold. “Mutual benefit?”

“Yes.” Eliza turned around to face him, staring him straight in the eyes. “We’re both adults, Mr. Young. Surely you understand this basic rule?”

Calvin’s expression turned utterly indifferent, the warmth gone entirely.

After about half a minute of locking eyes with her, he turned and left.

The slam of the door was like a weight being lifted off her shoulders.

See, when you no longer expect anything from someone, there’s no disappointment to feel.

The weather was nice that day, and Eliza was in a good mood.

Even Ottilie noticed and asked her what made her so happy.

“Your recovery and discharge from the hospital is the happiest thing for me.”

Ottilie’s heart warmed instantly. She gently stroked Eliza’s head like when she was little. “You’ve worked hard all these years, my little coat.”

After leaving the hospital, Eliza was about to call a cab when she spotted a familiar figure ahead. She immediately stopped and said to Ottilie, “Mom, I need to go to the restroom.”

“I’ll wait for you here.”

“Come with me.” Eliza insisted on having her accompany her.

Ottilie sighed, “You’re already this old and still afraid to go to the bathroom alone?”

“Yes, so you need to come with me.”

Ottilie had no choice but to wait outside the restroom.

Eliza stayed in the restroom a little longer, making sure those two irritating people had left before slowly coming out.

“Is it your stomach that’s bothering you?” Ottilie’s first concern was for Eliza’s well–being.

“Just a little, ate something bad last night,” Eliza made up a quick excuse.

“You’re at the hospital, we should get a doctor to check you out.”

“It’s fine now, let’s go, the car’s here.”

Eliza reassured Ottilie several times that she was fine, and only then did Ottilie relax and walk with her out.

“By the way, I think I saw Calvin just now.” Ottilie casually mentioned.

Eliza’s heart skipped a beat.

“But I’m not sure, maybe I just mistook someone else for him.”

Eliza’s heart settled again. “You must have seen wrong! He’s on a business trip, not in Washington.”

“Well, that’s good.” Ottilie felt relieved after hearing this.

After all, she had seen someone who looked like Calvin with a young woman by his side. They seemed to be quite close.

But it must have been a mistake.

On Monday, when Eliza arrived at Everest, she ran into Gideon.

This guy really had too much free time and insisted on showing up to watch the drama unfold.

Too bad, he would be disappointed.

“Eliza, didn’t expect to see me, huh?” Gideon sneered at her habitually.

Eliza didn’t bother responding, heading straight to her workstation.

Gideon followed closely behind. “You must have spent the weekend thinking about how to stay at Everest, right?”

Eliza shot him a cold glance.

Gideon, however, appeared certain, “Did I hit the nail on the head? Are you upset now? Let me tell you, Eliza, whether you want to leave or not, you’re leaving today. Whether you like it or not, I’ll be watching you closely.”

After saying that, he pointed at his own eyes with two fingers, then pointed at Eliza. “I’ll be watching you!”

The first thing Eliza did when she sat down was print out her resignation letter.

Although she had submitted several before, she couldn’t be sure that Calvin had kept them.

To be on the safe side, she printed another one.

“Gideon, what brings you here?”

Medea had come with Calvin.

Gideon acted surprised, like he had discovered a new world, and asked the two of them, “Early in the morning, you both came together, I’m guessing what I think, right?”

He deliberately glanced at Eliza, waiting for her reaction.

But Eliza didn’t react at all.

She was just wondering, since Calvin and Medea were living together, why had that night felt like they hadn’t done it in ages?

So urgent and needy.

Even two days later, her waist was still sore.

After pressing the print button, Eliza walked to the printer.

Gideon sneered and scoffed, “Really good at pretending.”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it was loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.

“You’ll cry later!”

He still thought Eliza was pretending to stay calm, but that she was actually a mess inside.

“Gideon, why are you always causing trouble for Secretary Grant?”
