deal. It’s always free for me.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the room fell into a deathly silence.
But in that silence, Eliza calmly said her goodbyes to Camille and left.
Gideon had always mocked her for being “sleeped with for free,” and now, she wanted him to know who was really the one being “slept with for free.”
After Eliza left, Calvin’s gaze grew darker, his entire presence radiating coldness.
Gideon, shivering, called out, “Calvin…”
“Why bother provoking her?” Calvin’s face darkened as he threw down the words and left.
“Calvin.” Medea’s face was also not looking too good, but she still hurried to follow him, “Mr. Henderson has been waiting for a while. I told him you’d come, and he’s been waiting for you.”
She was worried that Calvin wouldn’t go with her to meet Mr. Henderson.
Fortunately, Calvin wasn’t affected by Eliza and still went with her to meet Mr. Henderson.
After meeting with Camille, Eliza checked on Quinn Group’s business situation the next day.
There were indeed problems!
Several old projects had been delisted, but they were still reporting profits.
It was clear evidence of fraud!
It was common for capital companies to have some hidden risks, but if it was already out in the open it meant the company was running out of funds.
Eliza had no choice but to give up on Quinn Group.
But then, Mr. Quinn from Quinn Group called Eliza, asking when she would report to the company.
Eliza made up an excuse to brush him off.
Mr. Quinn, however, didn’t seem to care whether Eliza joined Quinn Group or not. Instead, he subtly asked about Everest’s situation.
It was clear that Mr. Quinn had been targeting Everest, and more specifically, Calvin, when he reached out to her.
“We at Quinn Group have certain performance requirements. Miss Grant, if you join us, how many projects can you bring?”
“Sorry, Mr. Quinn, I signed a non–compete agreement with Everest.”
“I know, I know. It’s industry rules. What I meant was, with Everest being such a big group, they must have a lot of projects. Even if it’s the leftover ones, we can still share some of the pie and survive. You know, it’s all about having a big tree to shelter you.”
Mr. Quinn no longer hid his intentions.
“Besides, with your relationship with Mr. Young, even if you bring over some projects, he wouldn’t say anything. Men always have some lingering feelings for the past.”
Eliza’s heart sank completely.
But this wasn’t even the worst part.

Chapter 47
In the following days, Eliza had contact with several other HR representatives from different companies, and their motives were almost identical to Mr. Quinn’s.
They were all targeting Everest.
She had no choice but to lower her standards and start reaching out to smaller–scale capital companies and investment firms.
Though Eliza didn’t have an impressive academic background, her resume was more than enough, and initially, several companies were quite interested in her.
But as the conversations progressed, the tone of the companies suddenly changed, and they claimed her qualifications weren’t suitable.
The thing was, her qualifications had always been on the table from the start–she had been upfront and honest about everything.
After probing for a few days, one HR representative, who had a good impression of Eliza, finally explained the issue.
It turned out that Everest had tarnished her background in their reference check, making other companies hesitant to consider her.
Eliza’s mind immediately flashed to Calvin’s words:
“As long as I don’t give my approval, who in Washington would dare to hire you?”
So it was Calvin who had orchestrated this behind the scenes!
Tears were strange and they could be held back when it hurt, or when one was tired, but when feeling wronged, they couldn’t be controlled.
