Chapter 48
“Calvin is such a jerk! Seven years! Not seven days, not seven months, but a full seven years! How could he do this to you?”
After the call, Belle went straight from the airport to pick up Eliza and take her home.
Every time Eliza was feeling down, if Belle was free, she would personally cook for her.
In addition to being beautiful and having a great figure, Belle was also an excellent cook.
Every time Eliza ate her cooking, she felt somehow healed.
Belle would always tailor the meals to Eliza’s mood.
If Eliza was simply sad, there would be three dishes and a soup.
If it was something a little more serious, it would be five dishes and a soup.
And if she was especially upset, Belle would almost go all out and prepare a grand feast for her.
Just like tonight.
Even though Belle had just gotten off a flight after two months of nonstop work overseas and was in dire need of rest, she still worked tirelessly in the kitchen to make Eliza a delicious meal.
“Enough, enough, don’t make so much! I can’t eat all of this!” Eliza couldn’t bear to see her exhausted and quickly stopped her.
Belle assessed Eliza’s expression and confirmed she wasn’t as upset as earlier. Only then did she wash her hands and join her at the table.
“Drink some?” Eliza asked her.
The two of them used to occasionally have a drink together.
But this time, Belle clearly refused. “Your stomach isn’t great, and you’re weak. It’s better not to drink. Drink more soup, it’s good for your stomach.”
Eliza had no choice but to drink the soup.
Honestly, although alcohol could be addictive, it wasn’t good for the body,
Just like Calvin.
So Eliza gave up on alcohol and chose to drink the soup.
That night, Eliza and Belle squeezed into the same bed to sleep. They chatted intermittently.
With Belle by her side, Eliza had one of the best nights of sleep in a long time.
No dreams, just peaceful rest.
The next morning, after having breakfast, Eliza received a call from the HR department at Fortune, notifying her that she had an interview with the
company.
It was a good start.
Although Fortune wasn’t as big as Everest, it still held a solid position in its niche.
Belle took out her professional skills and personally helped Eliza get dressed.

“See? This is your real beauty!”
Belle didn’t forget to mock Eliza’s previous style, “I’m going to throw away all those old nun–like outfits you used to wear! Not keeping a single one!*
“Don’t, I actually paid a lot for those,” Eliza said, feeling a little pained.
“Ugly clothes deserve to be thrown in the trash with the worthless men!”
“…Alright!”
That, Eliza could accept.
Looking at Eliza, Belle was more and more pleased. “Eliza, why did you deliberately dress so badly before?”
She still couldn’t figure this out.
Eliza averted her gaze, stammering.
Finally, under Belle’s ‘interrogation‘, she confessed.
“It was Calvin. He didn’t like me dressing too extravagantly. He said it would attract attention from other men.”
“Ugh!” Belle couldn’t accept this reasoning. “That’s just his possessiveness talking!”
Back when Eliza was deep in love, she would defend Calvin, thinking that his jealousy was a sign he cared about her.
But now, she didn’t say a word. She simply agreed with Belle.
All men were dogs.
Eliza arrived at Fortune at 10 AM, where she was personally greeted by the HR manager.
They asked her a few professional questions and were very satisfied with her responses and performance.
“Please wait here for a moment, I’ll take your resume to Mr. Henderson,” the HR manager said with a smile.
Eliza agreed.
Belle texted her to ask how the interview went.
Eliza replied that everything was going smoothly.
Belle sent a string of celebratory emojis and asked her to treat her to a meal.
Eliza agreed and told her to pick the restaurant.
Belle happily went off to select a restaurant.
About half an hour later, the HR manager returned, but her expression had noticeably changed.
Eliza couldn’t help but feel a sinking sensation in her chest, a bad premonition bubbling up.
“Sorry, Miss Grant, but Mr. Henderson did not approve of your application.”
The HR manager handed back Eliza’s resume, once again apologizing. “Sorry for wasting your time.”
Eliza calmly accepted the resume.
Although she felt disappointed, this wasn’t the first time she had faced such a situation.

And the more times she went through it, the easier it became to accept.
“I’d like to know the reason Mr. Henderson didn’t approve. Would you mind sharing?” Eliza asked politely.
The HR manager shook her head. “I’m not sure.”
Eliza didn’t want to make things difficult for her, so she thanked her and left.
While waiting for the elevator, Belle had already chosen the restaurant.
Eliza replied with “Good.”
Just as the elevator doors opened, footsteps and voices came from behind her.
They sounded so familiar that Eliza’s back immediately stiffened.
Unfortunately, it was Calvin, with Medea.
Calvin really brought Medea everywhere with him.
“Mr. Young, you’re too polite. I didn’t expect you to personally come for this capital expansion project. I’m really flattered!”
Calvin replied, “This is a project that Lu is responsible for. She just returned from abroad and isn’t very familiar with the capital scene here in Washington. Having me here makes her feel more at ease.”
Mr. Henderson immediately understood, “So Mr. Young is here to support Director Wynn.”
Medea smiled gently, her tone sounding helpless, but more like showing off her love.
“Calvin is just too worried about me. I can handle things myself, but he insists on accompanying me. What can I do?”
Even though Eliza was facing away from them, she was still overwhelmed by the sweetness coming from the two of them.
Her resume clenched tightly in her hand, the emotions she had carefully hidden deep inside herself burst out all at once.
Eliza turned around to face them.
“Miss Grant, what are you still doing here?” Mr. Henderson recognized her immediately,
After all, he had just reviewed her resume ten minutes ago.
He didn’t expect her to be more beautiful in person than in the resume photo. His eyes lit up, but inside, he regretted rejecting her so soon.
Eliza remained calm, her gaze drifting past Calvin before looking at Mr. Henderson. “Mr. Henderson, I’d like to know why you rejected my application.”
Mr. Henderson didn’t expect her to ask so directly, and he was at a loss for words.
“Was it something you found in the background check that led to the rejection?“,
“Um…” Mr. Henderson was sweating.
“Well, since Mr. Young is here, if you have any doubts, feel free to ask him directly. I’d like to know his answer as well.” Eliza’s gaze towards Calvin was calm, almost numb.
She wanted to know what seven years of sacrifice, devotion, and sleepless nights meant to Calvin.
What did those heartfelt feelings and endless nights of intimacy amount to in his eyes?

Calvin didn’t avoid her gaze.
His expression was half–smiling, but the faint smile never reached his eyes. His brown eyes were cold and empty, radiating a chilling pressure that made it hard to look him in the eye.
But Eliza didn’t retreat. Her voice was soft, yet firm as she spoke again, “So, Mr. Young, how do you evaluate the past seven years I spent with you?”
