“Well, you sure have a lot of inside information.”

Calvin leaned back in his booth, his handsome face as expressionless as water, not a hint of emotion showing.

“If it weren’t for your pressure. Henderson would probably have tried to recruit Eliza. You know, he’s just an old pervert.”

Calvin didn’t respond, casually picking up the wine glass and taking a sip.

Baxter was surprised, “Aren’t you allergic to alcohol?”

“I’ve been undergoing desensitization treatment recently. I can drink a little now,” Calvin replied.

Baxter was even more puzzled. “Why suddenly start drinking?”

Gideon butted in unexpectedly, “Of course, it’s to block drinks for Medea! She’s Mr. Young’s first love, his precious one.”

Baxter was about to confirm with Calvin, but just then, Medea and Josh returned.

He simply steered the conversation back to its previous topic. “So why are you making things hard for Eliza? She’s been with you for seven years. You’re not that heartless, are you?”

“Isn’t it because Eliza doesn’t know what’s good for her? Mr. Young was just venting his frustration!” Gideon sneered. “She really thinks she’s something special! She thought Mr. Young would beg her to stay, but wait and see, she’ll come crawling back to beg him. It’s just a matter of time.”

Josh grabbed his coat, saying to the group, “You guys drink, I’ve got something to do, I’m heading out.”

“What’s more important than a brother’s gathering?” Gideon tried to stop him.

But Josh walked off without a second glance.

Medea’s expression soured a bit, and Gideon asked, “Medea, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”

After hesitating for a moment, Medea said, “Josh seems to be considering hiring Eliza.”

Calvin finished the rest of his wine in one go.

The alcohol began to take effect, and his eyes showed a faint red tint, which only deepened the mysterious darkness of his gaze.

Eliza had just finished a shower and opened her laptop to browse job websites.

Even smaller companies would do, and it didn’t matter if they were farther away.

She wasn’t about to give up easily.

She didn’t believe that Calvin’s reach could be that long!

While browsing, her phone rang with an unknown number.

It was an unexpected call from Henderson at Fortune.

He asked Eliza if she had found a suitable job, and Eliza told him the truth–that she hadn’t.

Henderson said, “How about considering becoming my personal secretary?”

Eliza frowned, “But I applied for the investment manager position, Mr. Henderson, I think you’ve got the wrong idea.”

“I haven’t. I specifically called to ask if you’d be willing to be my personal secretary,” Henderson stressed the words “personal secretary” intentionally.

Eliza immediately understood and clearly rejected his offer.

After being rejected, Henderson became angry and sarcastic, “What’s with the high and mighty attitude? Everyone knows you’re just Calvin’s cast–off, the worn–out shoe. Now that he doesn’t want you anymore, you’re everywhere being shut out. I’m being kind to offer you a hand, and you still try to act all high and mighty!”

“Ungrateful!”

Eliza hung up the phone and couldn’t help but feel relieved she hadn’t actually taken the job at Fortune.

If she had gotten hired there with Henderson as her boss, she wouldn’t have lasted long!

At least Calvin served a purpose in shielding her from the dirt.

Eliza couldn’t help but laugh at her own mentality.

She sent out several more resumes, no longer concerned about the company’s size.

She was willing to try anything as long as it seemed like a fit. What if an opportunity came up?

After finishing her job applications, she prepared to head to her bedroom to rest, but a sudden sharp pain in her abdomen made her break out in cold

sweat.

The pain was intense and familiar.

It was her period, arriving early!

Since her miscarriage, her cycles had been completely irregular, often coming without warning and accompanied by even worse cramps.

The short walk from the sofa to her desk felt like an eternity as she struggled to support herself on the wall.

Eliza shakily pulled out some painkillers from the drawer, swallowing them dry.

She touched her forehead, and it was drenched in cold sweat.

Dr. Shelton had told her that her body was severely depleted, and even with proper care, she might never fully recover.

A broken heart could heal with time, but the damage to her body was permanent and irreversible.

Eliza curled up in bed, feeling dazed and numb.

Thankfully, the painkillers started to take effect, and the pain in her abdomen gradually lessened.

But she still felt terribly cold, a cold that seemed to pull her back to that rainy night.

The tightly closed door…

The black umbrella held over her head….

The hand that pulled her out of the mud…

A knock at the door startled Eliza. She suddenly sat up in bed.

The empty room reminded her that it had all been a dream.

As she was lost in thought, the knock came again, this time even more urgent, like it was hammering on her forehead.

The noise was maddening.

Eliza glanced at the time–past midnight.

Who would be knocking at this hour?

Before she could check, her phone started ringing as well.

The screen displayed five words: “The free–for–all escort.”

Still groggy, Eliza didn’t immediately react, forgetting she had renamed Calvin’s contact that night in anger after he had been so rough with her.

It wasn’t until she heard Calvin’s voice outside that she snapped awake.

“Open the door! Eliza!”

Who the hell was barking like a lost dog in front of her door at this hour?

Eliza didn’t want to deal with him and pulled the blanket over her head, intending to go back to sleep.

But Calvin wasn’t letting up, knocking louder with each strike.

The way he was knocking would surely disturb the neighbors.

Eliza didn’t want to risk a complaint from them, so she had no choice but to get up and open the door.

But she was cautious, opening only a small crack.
