Christina woke up bright and early when the rays of sun hit her through the curtains of their room. She groaned awake and opened her eyes slowly.
Her eyes searched around the empty room she was sleeping in but there was no sign of Max. Alarmed, she sat upright. Her head was in a mess.
Last night, it has taken almost a miracle for her to fall asleep but Max kept her company all through the night until she finally did.
He had promised that he wouldn't leave her side so she was surprised to see that he wasn't next to her when she woke up. At what point did he even leave?
And how come she never noticed?
Just as she was about to go full panic mode, the door pushed open and he walked in. He was already dressed and was surprised to see that she was awake.
"Where did you go?" She asked, jumping out of bed to meet him halfway. "I was worried you know? You could've at least dropped a note or something to tell me that you were stepping out for a while."
"But you were sleeping beautifully. I didn't want to be selfish to disturb you especially after what it took to get you asleep last night." He explained, his lips widened in a smile.
"I'm sorry if I made you worry but I wanted to make sure that my car is in good condition so that I can drive you home." He added. This was the first time he was probably explaining himself to a woman. It felt nice to have someone care about him.
"I'm sorry for getting worked up. I didn't mean to." She apologized, eyes afraid to meet his.
"I know but thank you for worrying about me."
A small smile ghosted her lips but it quickly faded as soon as it appeared.
"Go and get ready. I'm waiting for you." He said to her and she nodded once before walking into the bathroom to clean herself up.
When she was finished, she joined Max outside and after checking out, they exited the hotel and made for his car.
He opened the door for her to enter and get comfortable before taking the wheel.
"Here," He handed her a carrier paper-cup of takeout coffee after pulling his seat belt over his chest with a soft click. "I didn't know what you'd like so I ordered a few."
Christina took it gratefully. "T-Thank you."
She opened one and raised it up to her mouth to take a sip. She sighed softly when the steam hits her nostrils. It smelt nice.
"I've also sent a message to Hera to let her know that I'm taking you home now so do give her a call when you arrive so that she wouldn't worry."
"Of course." She answered, taking subtle glances at him as he focused on the road in front of him. She wanted to express her gratitude better but she didn't know how to go about it.
"I urm..." She was about to say something when his phone rang out. Excusing himself, he picked it up with one hand to answer while steering perfectly the wheels with his other hand.
"What do you want again, Patty?" He groaned out, earning a look from Christina.
Patty again? Wasn't she the same Patty who called him about their missing child or something? Was she really his wife or girlfriend? And does he really have a child?
She had the increasing urge to ask but she didn't want to pry and besides, why would she? What purpose would it serve? What good would knowing do for her?
"Patty, it's eight in the morning and I swear that I'm not in the mood for your shenanigans right now." He uttered tiredly, bringing Christina back from her reverie.
Max felt good. He didn't know why but her apology felt like a band-aid on an open bruise.
"I'm not afraid of you Max." She proclaimed sincerely and he glanced at her briefly, his eyes softening a little before focusing on the road.
What is it about her voice and the way that she speaks that makes him feel like this?
Christina on the other hand was glad that she was able to get it off her chest. That she was able to tell him how she truly felt.
Yes, he might have a lot of faults but he was a good person and he has proven that to her. Not only does he look out for her but he also cares for her and last night, showed her everything that she needed to see.
It saw the kind of person that he was, the real Max hiding behind that mask. He was warm, kind and gentle hearted.
"So, do you forgive me?"
"I was never angry at you cupcake." He answered. "I just felt sad that you never gave me a chance but it's all the past now. And I'm glad that we got to talk it out like this. I like this."
"Me too." She conceded.
"I'll do my best not to judge you so harshly from now on. I just wanted you to know that." She added before sinking into her seat. "And yes, we can go back to how it used to be. You can call and text me anytime if you want to."
Max felt elat
ed. Did she just give him permission to be close to her or was he having a fever dream right now?
