"When are you leaving for home?" Bryce asked as he stretched himself out on the couch that he was seated on. Max had invited him over to talk about something urgent and he had only just arrived minutes ago.
"In a couple of days." Max answered, eyes focused on the papers in front of him. He wanted to get this over and done with before he leaves for his trip.
"And you're still working?" Bryce questioned, eyes staring down at the paper that his friend was scribbling on. "Can't you finish it when you come back?"
Max chuckled, shaking his head in the process. "I'll be swamped with work over there as well and I want to leave with the knowledge of nothing waiting back here for me when we arrive."
"We?" Bryce picked on his statement, eyes furrowed in confusion. "You're going with someone? I thought that it was a solo trip. That's what you told me a week ago."
"Change of plans." Max answered, trying to keep Bryce's imagination from running any farther than it already has. "It just happened last minute."
"So, who is it?"
Max cursed himself internally at that question. How could he let that slip to Bryce of all people? His friend was actually very smart and not someone you could hide things from.
"Just a business partner. Nothing serious." He lied, trying to brush off the conversation but Bryce only wanted to dwell on it.
"You hesitated," Bryce pointed out, not sure why Max of all people would be hesitant to talk to him. "You never hesitate. Are you hiding something from me?"
"What could I possibly be hiding from you?" Max stared at him. "I just told you that it's a business partner."
Bryce shrugged, standing up to his feet as he approached Max's table. "Are you going with a woman? Is that what 'we' meant? Cause it doesn't sound like a business partner trip at all."
"And if I was, you think that I wouldn't tell you about it? What's there to hide?" He gave a nervous laugh. If Bryce were to figure out that the business partner was in fact his sister in-law, Max wasn't sure how he would take it.
"You tell me." Bryce looked away from him. "If it was a business partner then you could've just said so instead of acting like you were hiding something."
"You just popped the question so suddenly that my brain went off for a few minutes. Do you see how busy I am?" He pointed to the papers littered on his desk as he spoke.
He didn't want to give off the illusion that he was indeed hiding the fact that it was going with a woman or Bryce would find a way to get it out of him.
"Your brain doesn't just go off so suddenly." Bryce countered. "Buddy, If it's a woman then you know that I'll support you right? You don't have to act like it's the end of the world."
"It's not a woman."
"Yeah right." Bryce said mockingly and returned back to his seat, leaving Max to fight with his inner demons. Of course he thinks that he'd support him and that's because he doesn't know who the person is in the first place.
"This will probably be the first time you're taking someone home in a very long time," Bryce reminded him. "Are you sure about this? Do you really want to?"
"It's a visit not a wedding procession."
