Snowball’s scales exploded outward.

His big, white head snapped around at lightning speed.

Someone was sneaking a touch right at the base of Snowball’s tail.

Big Ben placed his hands over his round, bouncy belly, looking all serious.

Snowball slowly turned his head back.

Suddenly, he whipped his head around again!

Big Ben gave his best innocent smile and asked, “What? Did I do something?”

Snowball squinted, suspicious.

Snowball couldn’t tell if he was imagining things, but Big Ben seemed to be inching even closer to him.

Big Ben clapped both hands over his mouth, eyes wide with surprise. It said, “Oh my! Someone grabbed your tail?”

Snowball hissed.

It was saying, “It’s the base of my tail.

“Get it right.”

Big Ben pulled a face, looking super disgusted.

It said, “Seriously, how can anyone be this shameless? Absolutely vile!”

He sounded so self-righteous about it!

He was acting all high and mighty!

Snowball’s eyes were filled with doubt. It thought, ‘Seriously, was it not him? Did I just imagine that?’

He slowly turned his big head back, looking kinda spaced out.

His tail tip flicked back and forth.

With a blank look on his face, Snowball turned his head and stared in disbelief as Big Ben, who had somehow crouched behind him, was wearing a devilish grin and reaching out his hand toward the tip of his tail!

That was awkward!

Snowball shot up a foot and a half, baring his two sharp, white fangs at Big Ben.

It snarled, “You damn bot!

“I’m gonna bite you!”

When Stella walked in with Lucas, the first thing she saw was Big Ben sprawled out on the landscape tree, hugging it like a big bear. When he saw them, he waved with one hand.

Big Ben called out, “Hi.”

As soon as Snowball spotted Stella, he rushed over and bumped Allan out of the way, making him stumble. Feeling totally wronged, Snowball put on a one-snake show, acting out just how shameless Big Ben was.

At the end, Snowball started angrily sputtering at Big Ben, who was still hanging onto the tree like a big doofus.

It was obvious from the tone; Snowball was definitely swearing his head off.

Lucas puffed up his cheeks, looking all tough and serious as he glared at Big Ben, pointing at Snowball with his tiny hand.

He was asking Big Ben to apologize to Snowball.

Big Ben, still sprawled out on the thick branch, declared, “At this moment, I offer my deepest apologies to your most noble tail!”

Lucas tilted his head, blinking.

Snowball hissed, as if saying, “It’s the base of my tail.”

Big Ben said, “Alright then, Big Ben humbly apologizes to your most honorable tail base, and throws in 365 days of good vibes!”

Allan asked, “Stella, you set up Big Ben’s language system, didn’t you?”

Stella replied, “Yeah.”

Allan asked, “When you upgraded him, you sure nothing weird happened?”

He pointed at his own head, twirling his finger. He added, “Like, you know, a little crazy up here?”

Stella used to be totally sure, but now she was starting to have her doubts.

Meanwhile, the interspecies bickering between Snowball and Big Ben was still going full blast!

Snowball hissed, as if saying, “Liar

“Who’s more shameless than you? Seriously, you’re the worst!”

Big Ben poked his fingers together, looking all wronged. It protested, “Come on, I’m just a machine, not a human!”

Snowball froze.

Then it laid into Big Ben even harder.

Lucas, sandwiched between Snowball and Big Ben, glanced left, then right, looking adorably confused.

Stella turned to Lucas and asked, “Where’s Sebastian?”

Lucas blinked, his pale, squishy cheeks totally blank, and pointed upstairs with his tiny hand.

Stella raised an eyebrow and asked, “Still not done?”

She was starting to wonder just how much of a “side gig” Nathan’s little project really was.

Lucas shook his head, then nodded, then shook it again, then nodded once more.

It looked like this question was way too hard for him to answer!

Stella was speechless.

Twenty minutes later, Lucas was out cold on the bed.

Stella quietly stepped out of the bathroom after her shower, her head lowered, and came face-to-face with Blackie.

Blackie slithered up her wrist like he’d done it a thousand times, letting his little head droop onto the back of her hand.

He gazed up at her with his beady little eyes, pleading for help.

Stella lazily dried her hair, her loose-necked loungewear showing off her pale collarbone and that perfectly placed little mole. Her skin, fresh from the shower, glowed with a soft pink hue.

“Did Ivan send you?” she asked, her tone relaxed and lazy.

She poured herself a glass of water and sipped it slowly.

Blackie nodded his tiny head, his tail tip wrapping gently around her finger.

He felt cool to the touch.

His black-and-white markings were striking.

Stella sighed, tucked Lucas in, and turned to head out the door.

The elevator doors slid open upstairs.
