Shadows Between Us (Stella and Sebastian) novel Chapter 295

Chapter 295 You Have Half An Hour

Inside the van, Dexter took off his sunglasses and turned his head to look out the window at Stella riding her motorcycle. Jack’s voice rang out in awe. “Damn, she’s badass!”

“Dexter, don’t you think you two kinda look alike? What if she’s that long-lost sister your family has been searching for?” Jack cracked up at his own joke.

If that were true, the odds would be about as good as winning the lottery.

Dexter was surprised.

He turned his head, his strikingly handsome face totally blank, just giving Jack a deadpan look.

Outside, the traffic light turned red.

Stella pulled out her phone with one hand, accepted Emerson’s friend request on WhatsApp, and hit him up with a voice call.

Under her helmet, her white Bluetooth earpiece sat quietly in her ear.

“Ms. Carter?” Emerson answered it immediately, a hint of surprise in his voice. Clearly, he hadn’t expected her call.

There was some background noise, like he was in a car.

Stella cut straight to the point. “Who is Dexter to you?”

Emerson was silent for a long moment.

“He’s my brother,” he replied.

The moment Stella mentioned Dexter, Emerson had a bad feeling in his gut.

Emerson asked, “What’s up, Ms. Carter?”

Stella let out a nonchalant “oh,” but her next words sent a chill down Emerson’s spine. “You’ve got half an hour to get to the address I just sent and pick up your brother. If you don’t, you’ll have to face whatever comes next.” With that, she hung up.

Emerson, already on his way back to Jaffina, could only stare at his phone in stunned silence.

He frowned, thinking about calling Dexter’s agent, Jack, but instead he slid open the partition and told the driver, “Turn around. We’re heading back to Haliville.”

Just before the light turned green, Stella sent over the address of the café.

The café was empty.

Jack made sure the place was reserved just for Dexter and Stella alone.

Dexter glanced at her. “Want something to drink?”

Stella shot him a cold look, her voice flat as she rested her chin on one hand. “Just say what you came to say.” Perhaps he was used to being fawned over, but her bluntness caught him off guard.

“Eh, forget it. I’ll just have a cup of coffee.” Stella suddenly changed her mind.

Dexter felt a bit thrown off.

Stella caught his look and sneered. “If you say something I don’t wanna hear, I gotta have something handy to toss at you.”

Dexter sat there, at a loss for words.

He snapped the menu shut and ended up not ordering anything.

Jack sat some distance away, his expression complicated as he read Emerson’s messages, especially the one below.

Jack had never heard of a request like this.

But he still told the waiter to clear everything off the table.

Both Stella and Dexter stared at the empty table and fell into silence.

Dexter shot Jack a look.

Jack shrugged and pointed at his phone.

Dexter was speechless.

Stella scoffed, leaning her chin on the sofa arm and giving Dexter a cold look. “Just say it,” she urged him.

A moment later, Dexter slid a signed check toward Stella.

Stella arched an eyebrow and picked up the check with one hand.

‘6 million?’ she thought, unimpressed.

Dexter said, “It’s 6 million.”

Stella gave him a half-smile and said, “You think I can’t read?”

Dexter frowned, at a loss for words.

‘Is she always this sharp-tongued?’ he wondered.

“I have a sister…” Dexter began, his voice low. “She’s really talented and plays the cello beautifully.” But before he could finish, Stella cut him off, raising her hand.

Stella said impatiently, “Cut the crap.”

Dexter was speechless.

He felt he had been suppressed by Stella ever since he walked through the door.

“But Sophie has a rare blood-clotting disorder. Her blood type is so rare that it’s almost impossible to find a donor. And you just happen to be a match,” Dexter said. With every word, Stella’s grin grew wider.

But that grin wasn’t friendly at all. It was the kind that made Dexter feel like a predator had him in its sights. He felt a cold shiver crawl up his spine.

Stella drawled, her tone rising at the end, “So?”

Dexter hesitated. “I hope…”

Stella chuckled. “You want me to take your 6 million and become your sister’s blood donor, right?”

She kept her chin propped up with one hand, idly twirling the check between her fingers, then looked him dead in the eye.

Dexter’s throat felt dry. “Sophie is really talented. She shouldn’t suffer because-”

“What’s it got to do with me?” Stella cut in.

Dexter frowned, clearly annoyed, but before he could get a word out, Stella pulled out her phone and dialed Emerson.

Emerson picked up instantly. “Ms. Carter, please, calm-”

Stella cut him off. “Emerson, you’d better hurry up, or you’ll be dragging Dexter out of here unconscious.”

“Ms. Carter-”

Stella didn’t even bother to listen and hung up the phone.
