Shadows Drift Beyond Memory by Xarin Vale novel Chapter 19

Carter’s mother’s heart condition flared up from the shock.

By the time they got her to the hospital, a blood clot had caused a stroke.

She was left paralyzed, unable to speak or seea complete vegetable.

Carter, meanwhile, had been brought in too late.

The tissue had died from lack of blood flow, and they had to remove everything to save his life. He was now a eunuch.

Vincent moved Gianna to a private hospital to protect the pregnancy.

No one was allowed to visitespecially not Carter.

At the same time, Vincent had Carter watched by bodyguards around the clock.

But when Carter woke up and realized what had been done to him, he completely snapped.

He swore he’d get revenge on everyone.

That night, he escaped.

My dad had assigned me a security detail, so Carter couldn’t get anywhere near me.

With nowhere else to direct his rage, he turned it on Gianna.

He lurked around the private hospital for a week, and finally found an opening to sneak into her room.

The moment Gianna saw him, her face went white.

Carter looked unhinged. He was holding a knife. Clearly, he was here to settle the score.

Carter, what are you doing here?

Gianna forced a smile, trying to calm him down.

But Carter didn’t care. He moved toward her, raising the knife-

This baby is yours!

In a moment of desperation, Gianna blurted it out.

Carter stopped.

He looked at her, suspicious and furious.

You said it was my dad’s! Now you’re saying it’s mine? Are you trying to trick me again?!

Gianna’s eyes filled with tears.

Carter, I’m not lying.

Your mom was chasing me down. I was scared something would happen to the baby, so I lied. I just wanted to protect our child.

She took his hand and pressed it against her stomach, her voice softening.

Feel it. This is our baby. Don’t you wanna see what they’ll look like?

Carter hesitated. He couldn’t have kids anymore.

That meant the baby in Gianna’s belly was the only child he’d ever have.

His plan to take her down with him faded.

But he still wasn’t fully convinced.

How do I know this is really mine?

Gianna hesitated, then took a deep breath.

Your father and I used condom.

But I really love you, Carter. So when we were together, we didn’t. You told me to take the pill after, but I secretly threw it up. I didn’t take it.

So this baby is yours, Carter. Your flesh and blood.

Gianna wrapped her hand around his.

The moment Carter lowered the knife, she quietly pressed the emergency call button.

A few seconds later, a team of bodyguards burst into the room.

Carter reached for the knifebut Gianna had already tossed it across the room.

Watching him get dragged away, Gianna sneered.

You’re pathetic. Did you really think I’d stick with you after everything? Good thing I had the sense to latch onto your father.

She rubbed her belly.

With this baby, I’ll have more money than I’ll ever need.

Carter gritted his teeth.

Don’t forgetI still have a stake in the Westbrook empire. I won’t let you get away with this!

Unfortunately for both of them, things didn’t go as planned.

Thanks to Mason’s arrangements, Vincent got into a car accident and ended up in a coma.

Suddenly, the company had no leader.

With me backing Mason as the daughter of the Business Council president, the board voted him in as CEO by an overwhelming margin. Carter didn’t stand a chance.

Under Mason’s orders, Gianna was kicked out of the private hospital.

And Carter became homeless.

In a final act of revenge, Carter dragged Gianna to the rooftop and jumped.

They both died on impact.

The baby died with them.

I found out while I was having dinner with Mason.

He’d arranged it to thank me for my support.

Mason took a sip of wine and said calmly:

They got what they deserved.

I looked out at the night skyline and nodded.

Yeah.”

We clinked glasses.

And I didn’t think about it again.
