Chapter 2
Police station mediation room.
Holden’s mother, Linda Chase, jabbed her finger at my face.
“Sutton Law! Did law school fry your brain? You’re not even married yet and you’re throwing your man in jail? How is my family supposed to show our faces after this?”
Holden sat in his chair with the handcuffs off now, crossing his legs and looking pissed.
Jade curled up against Linda’s side, sniffling softly.
“Linda, this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have joked around.”
“Sutton took it seriously. I don’t blame her–she was just trying to do the right thing…”
“Look at her!” Linda looked at Jade approvingly.
“Look how understanding Jade is!”
“And then there’s you! Cold as ice, not an ounce of warmth!”
I pulled out a tissue and wiped the spit off my face.
“Mrs. Chase, publicly insulting people is also illegal.”
Linda raised her hand to slap me, but an officer banged on the table.
“What do you think you’re doing? This is a police station! Sit down!”
Linda sat back down, fuming.
The officer reviewed his notes. “After checking everything, Ms. Yates shows no signs of physical harm. Both parties confirm it was just a joke.”
Then he glanced at me.
“The person who called was acting in good faith. Since this is a misunderstanding, just sign here and we’ll wrap this up.”
Holden scoffed.
“Wrap it up? Not that easy.”
He stood and walked over to me.
“Sutton Law, all my friends saw what happened. I was humiliated.”
“You want me to forgive you?”
He pointed at Jade’s feet.
“Jade ran to the hospital in heels today. Her feet are covered in blisters.”
“You, right now, get on your knees, lick Jade’s heels clean, and say ‘I was wrong.”

“Then maybe I’ll forget this happened.”
Jade quickly waved her hands.
“Oh no… Sutton, you’re a respectable woman, this would be beneath you…”
But her foot inched forward, those pink heels stopping right in front of my face.
Linda chimed in from the side.
“Exactly! When you mess up, you pay the price!”
“Still think you’re some princess? Keep this up and tomorrow your dad’s company goes under and you’ll be working the streets!”
I looked at Holden. “You sure about this?”
He lifted his chin.
“Obviously. Don’t do it? Fine–we’re done.”
“Your family’s finances aren’t exactly healthy right now. Without our investment, your dad’s jumping off a building.”
I’ve tolerated this arranged marriage for business, but that doesn’t include tolerating his bullshit!
I pulled out my phone and turned on the camera.
“Go ahead. Say what you just demanded again.”
Holden slapped my phone out of my hand.
Crack.
The screen shattered across the floor.
“Still trying to record? You pathetic robot. Think I won’t end you right here?”
He grabbed my collar and shoved me against the wall with his fist raised.
The officers immediately rushed over to restrain him.
“What are you doing? You want to assault an officer too?”
I leaned against the wall and straightened my rumpled collar.
Looked down at the shattered phone on the floor.
“Destroying my property worth over five grand–that’s significant.
“Plus attempted assault.”
“Holden Chase, that’s another crime on your tab.”
Holden kicked over a chair.
“Fine! FINE! You wanna play legal games? Let’s play!”

He pointed at Jade.
“Jade, call our lawyer. Sue her! Slander! Damage to reputation! I want a hundred grand for emotional distress–not a penny less!”
Jade wiped her tears, revealing a triumphant smile.
“Holden, are you sure? She didn’t mean any harm…”
“CALL! NOW!”
Linda stood up too, glaring at me.
“Sutton Law, you brought this on yourself!”
“We’re officially breaking off this engagement–tomorrow! Let’s see how you explain this to your father!”
With that, the three of them turned and stormed out together.
I crouched down and picked up the broken phone, carefully removing the SIM card while a slight smile crossed my lips.
Cloud backup complete. Video uploaded.
Break the engagement? Perfect.
But first, I’m teaching them what the law really means.
