Before anyone else could process what Holly meant, Flynn’s face had already changed.

He snatched the baby to check for himself.

In the entire month, they’d never once cared for the child.

This was the first time they’d seen his bare skin.

They turned him over frantically, checking everywhere.

The baby, jostled and uncomfortable, scrunched up his face and started wailing.

I seized the moment and stepped forward, scolding them.

“What are you doing? Give me my son!”

Holly stood frozen. At the sound of my voice, she spun around and lunged at me.

“Mira Foster! It was you! You switched them! Where’s my son?!”

I shoved her away with one hand, pulled the baby close, and said coldly:

“What are you talking about, Holly? This is my son. Yours died right after birth, remember?”

Holly’s face twisted. She lunged at me, clawing the air.

“No! You switched them! Give me back my baby!”

She was falling apart–panicked, furious, like she might tear me to pieces.

I stared her down and slowly smiled.

“Like I said, this is my son, Derek.”

“As for the birthmark–that was on your baby who died. Mine doesn’t have one.”

With that, I pulled out a stack of photos from my purse.

“I even had the hospital take memorial photos of your child. You wouldn’t pay for the burial, so I covered it.”

“I know losing your son broke your heart, but you can’t claim mine as your own.”

The black–and–white photos showed the baby they’d drowned, the round birthmark clearly visible.

Chapter 5

Holly refused to face the truth that she’d drowned her own child.

She started shaking, screaming like she’d lost her mind.

“That’s impossible! Your son was supposed to die!”

By now, everyone had caught on. They exchanged looks and started asking questions.

“Colonel Reeves, what’s going on? Didn’t Holly’s baby die a month ago?”

“Your son’s perfectly healthy. How could he have died?”

Everyone knew Holly’s baby had died.

The one I was holding was mine.

Nobody understood why she was losing it.

The room erupted into chaos. Flynn’s face went white, but he couldn’t say a word.

Holly tried to continue. “The one who died wasn’t—”

Flynn’s expression shifted. He lunged to cover her mouth.

He glanced nervously at the base commander, then hissed at her.

“Shut up! Have you lost your mind?!”

Holly pounded on him, eyes red, shrieking.

“Flynn Reeves, you heartless bastard! You set this up with that bitch, didn’t you? You two planned this together!”

Flynn looked sick. He grabbed Holly’s arm, voice sharp. “Enough! Just calm down!”

“How can I calm down?! You said you’d drowned Mira’s baby! My son was supposed to be safe with her!”

“Give me back my child!”

That sent another gasp through the crowd. People started whispering.

“Wait–they tried to drown Mira’s baby but ended up killing their own?”

“But Mira’s been caring for the baby all month. And Holly said her son died at birth. What’s really going on?”

“I never would’ve guessed. Flynn Reeves is sick enough to hurt a baby.”

Waves of disgust and judgment crashed down on Flynn and Holly.

I stood in the back, watching coldly.

This was exactly what I’d been waiting for.

The celebration had turned into a disaster. Guests stood around, shell–shocked.

The base commander grew darker by the second. He barked sharply:

“Flynn Reeves! What the hell is going on? You’d better explain yourself!”

On one side, Holly was hysterical.

On the other, the base commander and every guest demanded answers.

Flynn looked bloodless, sweat pouring down his face.
