Shadows Drift Beyond Memory by Xarin Vale novel Chapter 35

Flynn glanced around franticallyuntil his eyes landed on me, standing at the edge of the crowd with the baby.

He pointed at me and shouted: I don’t know anything! It was Mira! This is all her doing!

Mira told me the baby drowned. Holly felt bad for her and let her raise our nephew!

But Mira switched the babies and killed my nephew! We were all played!

In a few sentences, he’d cleared his own name and dumped everything on me.

Some people were already being swayed.

Someone asked hesitantly, Is that true?

Flynn nodded emphatically. Absolutely! Why would I kill my own son? This is a setup!

Mira’s not right in the head. Don’t believe her!

Watching him act so selfrighteous, I let out a cold laugh.

Flynn Reeves, don’t lie so much you start believing it yourself.

You’re the one who switched the babies. You’re the one who tried to drown him. And now you’re twisting the truth?!

He frowned, then blurted out without thinking:

You saw the birthmark the day you gave birth! You must’ve switched them later. This has nothing to do with me!

I smirked.

Oh, so you admit you knew about the birthmark. Then why was that baby in my room? Because you swapped him

first.

He stammered. I raised my voice.

If I hadn’t caught it in time and switched them back, my son would be dead right now!

The angrier I got, the louder I spoke.

I raised my hand and slapped Flynn hard across the face.

You plotted to kill your own child. Are you even human?

I looked up, tears streaming down my face right on cue.

Everyone, I thought it was just a hospital mix up at firstan honest mistake.

But no. Flynnthis monsterand Holly conspired to murder my son!

By sheer luck, we escaped. And now they’re trying to frame ine!

Flynn looked frantic, his eyes screaming murder.

That’s slander! You’re making this up! You have no proof!

Holly glared at me with pure venom.

Stop playing innocent. My son’s dead and yours is alive. Doesn’t that say everything? You’re the murderer!

But their stories kept changing, full of holes.

No matter how much they cried, nobody was buying it.

I kept my eyes red and said coldly:

What goes around comes around. Did you really think you’d get away with it?

Thank God I caught you before it was too late.

Flynn tried to say more, but the base commander cut him off His tone was icecold.

Enough, Flynn Reeves. I’m deeply disappointed in you. Your story’s full of holes. Do you think we’re all idiots?

Flynn looked desperate. Sir, this really wasn’t me. Let me explain-

But the commander just announced coldly:

You’ll spend this time on suspension. Forget about Fort Bragg.

As for what you’ve done, the Inspector General’s office will investigate thoroughly.

At that, Flynn’s face lost all color. His lips trembled as he collapsed to the floor.

The commander sighed and turned to me, his tone softer.

Mrs. Foster, I failed to catch Flynn’s misconduct.

But ultimately, this is a family matter. The decision is yours. I won’t interfere.

I understood the hint in his words. Without hesitation, I spoke.
