Chapter 103 Seeds of Doubt
“So generous all of a sudden?”
Elena let out a cool, almost amused laugh.

“You came all the way here just to say that. Are you worried Nathan will blame you if he loses his shares?” she continued, her tone smooth but sharp. “You’re talking to the wrong person. If you want to fix something, talk to Nathan. I’ve been trying to walk away from him. Has he ever wanted the same?”
Camille’s lips parted, but nothing came out.
She had no idea how to answer that.
“You really thought getting pregnant would lock in your place as Mrs. Hawthorne, didn’t you?” Elena went on, her words precise and deliberate. “Feeling disappointed now?”
Each sentence landed exactly where it hurt.
Camille’s hands trembled.
She truly believed that once she was carrying a child, Charles would have no choice but to accept her. She never expected him to defend Elena that fiercely.
All she could do was watch Elena walk away.
Inside the hospital room, Nathan stayed by Charles‘ bedside, guarding him as if Evan might steal something instead of simply stepping closer.
After hours of tension, Charles had finally fallen asleep from exhaustion.
Only Nathan and Evan remained in the room.
“Relax,” Evan said lazily. “You don’t need to look at me like I’m about to rob the place. Grandpa already made it clear. If you win Elena back, the shares are yours. I don’t get a cut. Instead of standing here annoying him, maybe you should focus on impressing her.”
He paused, then added casually, “Oh right, I almost forgot. When I came upstairs earlier, I saw Elena. Looked like she got here in a Kingsley car.”
“What?” Nathan snapped.
“Probably Alexander’s, right?” Evan shrugged. “Early in the morning, riding in his car. So where was she last night? I mean, Alexander just got married yesterday.”
Evan spoke as if he were commenting on the weather.
He enjoyed stirring the pot. The messier things got between Nathan and Elena, the better. If it escalated enough, maybe Charles would cross Nathan off the heir list for good.
“Cut the crap,” Nathan said coldly. “There’s no way Elena has anything to do with Alexander.”

But something uneasy flickered in his chest.

“Who knows?” Evan replied lightly. “Alexander’s wedding was yesterday, and no one even saw the bride’s face. Meanwhile, Elena was nowhere to be found. That’s a pretty wild coincidence, don’t you think?”
Nathan’s heart skipped.
Could it be that Elena had been lying to him this whole time? Could there really be something between her and Alexander?
When Elena returned to Velmora Media, she immediately sensed something off.
She had taken a few days off with Lydia’s approval, and this was her first day back.
The office felt unnaturally quiet. No chatter. Just the steady tapping of keyboards.
The air felt heavy.
“What’s going on?” Elena asked softly, leaning toward Jasmine.
Jasmine lowered her voice. “Lydia’s in a terrible mood. The big boss got married. You can connect the dots.”
Before Elena could respond, Lydia’s voice sliced through the room.
“Jasmine. Elena. Is this a coffee shop? If you have that much to talk about, maybe I should give you both the day off?”
Jasmine straightened immediately.
Elena returned to her seat as well, finally understanding. Alexander had gotten married, and Lydia had not even had the chance to confess her feelings before being shut out. Of course she was upset.
Elena had no intention of stepping on a landmine.
Unfortunately, Lydia did not intend to let her slide.
“Elena. My office.”
“Coming.”
Elena followed her in and closed the door behind her.
Lydia stared at her, eyes sharp with something close to resentment. “Are you happy Luna got fired?”
The accusation came out of nowhere. Elena knew Lydia blamed her for Luna’s dismissal and their falling
out.
“The conflict between Luna and me didn’t start because of me,” Elena said calmly. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
She had nothing to apologize for.

More importantly, she was now the one quietly calling the shots at Velmora Media.

“I don’t care about the past,” Lydia cut in. “We’re getting a new executive president. She’s being brought in from above. And when someone new takes over, they usually make changes fast. I suggest you lose the laid–back attitude.”
Lydia’s frustration was obvious.
Alexander had suddenly gotten married, which was bad enough. Then she received notice that he would no longer personally oversee Velmora Media. A female executive president was being parachuted in instead. No background details. Just instructions to cooperate fully.
Which meant her chances of seeing Alexander would drop to almost zero.
Elena was just as surprised.
Executive president? Could that possibly mean me? Is Alexander really stepping away from Velmora Media entirely?
“There’s something else,” Lydia continued, tapping her desk. “Starting tomorrow, people from Swiftline will be working here. I know you used to be a reporter there. You’re familiar with them. You’ll show them around and help them settle in.”
