Elena pressed her lips together and said nothing. What irritated her most was when someone clearly understood the problem yet chose to pretend nothing was wrong. Alexander’s mood had shifted the moment he walked in, but he had not said a word about it, as if he were waiting for her to break first.
“You’ve barely spoken to me since you got here,” she said, studying him. “Are you upset?”
Her tone carried quiet curiosity.
Alexander lifted a brow. “What do you think?”
His voice was still warm, almost approachable, and after speaking he calmly transferred the last piece of beef from his plate onto hers, as if everything were perfectly normal.
His composure only made her more uncertain.
After thinking it through, she could only connect it to one person. Nathan.
“Nathan came because of Victor,” she said steadily. “I have no intention of getting back together with him.
They might have come together because of a will, but loyalty still mattered. Alexander trusted her, and she had no intention of betraying that trust.
“I know,” Alexander replied.
“Then why are you acting like this?”
He suddenly reached toward her. Startled, she leaned back instinctively.
“Don’t move,” he said, his tone firmer now.
She stilled as his fingers adjusted the collar at her neckline. The red mark on her pale skin became more.
visible.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked, his gaze cooling.
It took her a moment to understand. He danger and had not called him.

As if to prove her point, she rotated her neck slightly.
His brow tightened further.
“Mrs. Kingsley,” he said, his voice heavier this time.
She stopped moving. “Yes?”
“I already told you, I’m not trying to lose my wife.”

He had said that before.

“If you don’t want me siding with my mother and insisting you quit your job and stay home as a full time wife, then stop putting yourself in situations that could get you hurt.”
“Okay,” she answered softly.
Something felt strange in her chest. They were married because of the will, were they not? Why did it feel as though he genuinely cared? Perhaps it was simply responsibility. If he had chosen to marry her, then he would take that role seriously.
“You’re right,” she admitted. “I didn’t think it through. I’ll be more careful.”
His expression finally eased.
That night Alexander stayed over. When she suggested he go home, he replied with complete confidence, “I can’t sleep alone.”
“If you stay, I won’t sleep,” she said, frowning. The bed was not large to begin with, and sharing it meant barely having room to turn.
“I could knock you out,” he said calmly, as if it were a reasonable solution.
She stared at him and ultimately gave in. What had happened earlier still lingered in her mind, and having him there did make her feel safer.
While Alexander showered, Elena took out her phone and contacted the reporter who had helped circulate the rumors about Nathan and Camille online. She told him that Victor had been taken in for questioning.
“Are you serious, Elena?” he said immediately. “You’re not messing with me, right?”
He immediately stopped what he was doing.
The head of Hawthorne Group being brought in would generate enormous attention.
“Why would I lie?” she replied with a faint smile. “If you don’t believe me, send someone to wait outside Hawthorne Group tomorrow and see whether Victor shows up.”
“Got it. Thank you. You’re the best,” he said eagerly.
After hanging up, Elena hesitated, then scrolled to another number and placed a call. The line connected quickly.
“Hello, is this Marcus Hale?”
“Who is this?” The voice on the other end sounded smooth and slightly oily.
“This is Elena. Can we meet tomorrow morning? Whatever Hawthorne Group is paying you, I’ll double it.”
Marcus had a strong reputation in legal circles. Victor had hired him several times before, and she had met him on a few occasions. Nathan would almost certainly ask Marcus to represent Victor this time.
The problem was not his ability. It was his character. When he had handled cases for Hawthorne Group in the past, he had quietly raised his fees at every opportunity.

Money was not an issue for her now.

The next morning, Elena arrived at a café with her cane and saw Marcus already seated inside. He had assumed the call was a prank, but when he saw her in person, his face filled with surprise.
