Chapter 159 Under the Surface

She forced down the sting of humiliation and the heaviness in her chest, then managed a polite, composed smile. “I’ll go with whatever you think is best.”
“Let’s head out. Take me home.”
Evelyn closed her eyes, clearly done with the conversation.
Fiona didn’t say anything else. She started the car and drove off.

Inside the hospital room, Elena and Alexander found themselves staring at each other in silence, the air thick with something unspoken.
It lasted just a little too long.
Elena finally broke it. “Are you hungry?”
She shifted slightly, trying to lighten the mood. “I can grab you some fruit or something if you want.”
After a brief pause, she added, “And if you’ve got things to handle at the office, you don’t have to stay. I’m doing fine.”
Alexander knew exactly how dedicated she was to her work. She had just stepped into the CEO role at Velmora Media, there was no way her schedule wasn’t packed.
“No,” she said calmly. “Everything’s already been taken care of.”
Elena then reached for an apple and a fruit knife, starting to peel it with steady, practiced movements.
Her fingers were long and pale, moving with quiet precision, almost soothing to watch.
Without warning, Alexander spoke.
“Yesterday, I went with Fiona to visit her father’s grave,” he said. “He used to mentor me. Before things fell apart for the Scott family, our families were pretty close.”
Elena’s hand paused for a brief second.
Her eyelashes trembled slightly. Is he… explaining this to me on purpose?
“I see,” she replied softly.
Then she lowered her gaze and continued peeling the apple, her expression hidden.
Alexander pressed his lips together into a thin line.
Since yesterday, he had noticed something off about her mood. In his mind, it had to be because of the accident, because he had been with Fiona at the time.
So he chose to explain.

He made it clear that there was nothing inappropriate between him and Fiona. But even after hearing it, she didn’t seem any better.
He couldn’t figure out where things had gone wrong.
Elena finished peeling the apple, cut it into small pieces, then picked one up with a fork and held it out toward him.
“Here.”
Alexander didn’t open his mouth.
His dark eyes stayed fixed on her face. “Why are you upset?”
Elena blinked, caught off guard. “What?”
“I already explained why I was with Fiona,” he said, his voice tightening slightly. “I didn’t cross any lines. Not the ones you set about this marriage.”
Elena fell silent for a moment.
Then she understood.
When she saw Fiona yesterday, yes, there had been a flicker of irritation, but it had nothing to do with love.
She and Alexander were legally married. That made things simple in her mind.
Fiona kept pushing boundaries, showing up again and again, acting provocatively right in front of her. No matter how patient someone was, that kind of behavior would get under their skin.
But when Alexander spoke up for her yesterday, that lingering frustration had already dissolved.
And besides, if he truly had feelings for Fiona, there would never have been a marriage between them.
“I’m not upset,” Elena said honestly, meeting his gaze. “I’ve just been thinking about work.”
Seeing the disbelief in his eyes, she even raised her right hand. “I swear, I’m telling the truth.”
Alexander almost let out a laugh, though it came out edged with frustration.
A project of hers, how much could it even bring in?
He, a man worth billions, was lying here in a hospital bed, and she hadn’t even shown the slightest
concern.
“Are you going to eat this or not?” Elena said, gently shaking the fork. “My hand’s getting tired.”
Alexander leaned forward and took the apple from her fork.
Then, as if the thought had just surfaced again.
“Why didn’t you use my card?”

Elena was speechless.
This again? It’s been days… how is he still stuck on this?
“I just thought,” she said carefully, “it was a gift for your mom. Using your money to buy her something felt a little unnecessary. And honestly, I really did forget at the time.”
She blinked at him, her tone softening unconsciously. “How about this, I’ll go shopping again sometime and use your card then, okay?”
Unbelievable… there are actually people who want others to spend their money.
At this rate, she was absolutely going to max that card out one day.
“Okay.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow slightly, a faint smile forming on his lips. The tension in his expression completely disappeared.
Elena looked at him, momentarily at a loss.
So he really was in a mood just because I didn’t use his card?
Alexander only needed to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation. After confirming there were no signs of a concussion, he was discharged.
Elena came to pick him up.
They had originally planned to head back to the estate, but halfway there, Walter called and asked them to come to Kingsley Manor for dinner.
Elena had no choice but to change direction.
On the way, she had already prepared herself mentally. She assumed Walter would lecture her as well.
Unexpectedly, the man didn’t say a single word to her.
He went straight after Alexander.
“I see getting married has made you bold,” Walter said, clearly annoyed. “Something this serious happens, and you don’t even bother telling me? What am I supposed to be, an outsider?”
Alexander, still with bandages wrapped around his head, gave a light cough. “It wasn’t anything serious.” “Oh, really?” Walter shot back immediately. “If it were serious, I wouldn’t be seeing you here, I’d be seeing you on the news. What, you expect Elena to marry into this family just to end up a widow?”
Walter glared at him, clearly worked up.
Alexander gave a faint, almost teasing smile. “That won’t happen. I value my life too much.”
“Cut the attitude,” Walter snapped. “I heard your secretary was driving. That’s unacceptable. Replace her.”
