A flat, automated voice came through the phone, calmly informing him that the person he was trying to reach was currently on another call.
Alexander fell silent, his expression tightening slightly.
Elena, however, had no idea he had called at all. She was driving across town with her Bluetooth connected, talking to Chloe, who sounded like she was seconds away from exploding.
Chloe said, “Someone just tipped me off, he’s literally at the bar right now drinking like nothing happened. I swear to God, this trash actually kept me on the hook while flirting with other girls at the same time. I’m not letting this go.”
Elena had received Chloe’s call about ten minutes earlier, and the situation had already spiraled by then.
About two weeks ago, Chloe had started seeing someone. It wasn’t official yet, but the guy had confessed his feelings, and he happened to check every box for her. She had been genuinely interested, and the two of them had been in that in–between stage where things were clearly heading toward a relationship.

Then earlier that day, someone had reached out to Chloe on Twitter, telling her that the same guy had been pursuing another girl at the same time.
Chloe had been furious.
So furious that she called Elena and said she was going to confront him, even used the phrase “go down together,” which immediately set off alarm bells.
Elena knew exactly how Chloe was when it came to relationships.
She didn’t tolerate betrayal in any form. If she felt played, she wouldn’t just walk away quietly, she would make a scene, and possibly something worse.
So Elena didn’t even think about informing Alexander. She grabbed her keys and drove straight out to find Chloe.
By the time she got to Blue Note Lounge, Chloe was already seated at the bar with two strong drinks in her
system.
Elena walked up quickly, her voice firm but controlled.
Elena said, “Chloe, that’s enough. We’re leaving.”
Chloe reached for another drink, but Elena pressed her hand down, stopping her before she could grab it. With the alcohol loosening her restraint, Chloe turned to her, eyes red and blazing with anger.
Chloe said, “Tell me something, why are guys like this so pathetic? Why can’t they just pick one person and mean it? Do they seriously need a whole roster of women just to feel like they’re worth something? Is staying loyal really that hard?”
Elena didn’t answer right away.

Is it really that hard?
The question lingered in her mind longer than she expected.
A relationship where both people stayed committed from beginning to end was something people talked about, but in reality, it was rare.
Feelings changed too easily, and people changed even faster.
Nothing about it was simple.
Elena softened her tone slightly.
Elena said, “You’ve had enough, okay? Let’s go. I’ll take you home.”
She reached out to help her up, but Chloe pulled away, her gaze locking onto a private booth across the
room.
Chloe said. “I asked the bartender, they’re in that booth. Elena, I’m going over there. I need to hear it from him. I’m not just walking away like this.”
Without waiting for a response, she started toward it.
That was Chloe. Once she made up her mind, there was no stopping her, if she didn’t do it tonight, she would do it tomorrow.
Elena let out a quiet breath.
Since she was already here, there was no way she was letting Chloe face this alone. Elena stepped forward and steadied her.
Elena said, “Fine, I’m coming with you.”
Chloe nodded, her eyes already glassy.
They reached the booth, and before they even opened the door, loud laughter spilled out from inside, careless and unrestrained.
A man’s voice carried clearly through the door.
Graham said, “I’m telling you, that girl Chloe is actually hilarious. I bought those cheap handmade roses online, like a dollar each, told her I made them myself, and she got so touched it was almost embarrassing.”
The room erupted in laughter.
Graham continued, clearly enjoying himself.
Graham said, “And those couple rings? Ninety–nine bucks online. I told her I designed them myself, and she practically fell for me on the spot.
More laughter followed.

Graham leaned back, his tone turning dismissive.

Graham said, “Honestly, she’s not even my type. There’s nothing there, no curves, nothing. If it wasn’t for helping you get info out of her, I wouldn’t even bother. A girl like that isn’t worth my time.”
Elena’s expression went cold instantly.
Chloe hadn’t even reacted yet.
Elena had already kicked the door open.
The loud bang cut through the laughter, and every head in the room turned.
There were several men inside, the lighting dim but not enough to hide faces once her eyes adjusted.
Based on the voice, the guy speaking had been sitting closest to the door.
Elena grabbed a bottle from the table and walked straight toward him, anger sharp and unmistakable.
Just as she was about to speak, her eyes adjusted fully to the light.
She saw clearly.
Nathan was sitting in the center, a cigarette between his fingers, looking completely at ease.
And the one who had been talking so freely was Graham Smith.
Nathan’s closest friend.
Elena had met him a few times before, and every single time, he had a different woman by his side, models, influencers, actresses, he rotated through them like it was nothing.
She had even warned Natha
habits from him.

She never expected that the person Chloe had been seeing would turn out to be him.
A complete joke.
Graham froze the moment he saw Elena holding the bottle.
Graham said, “Uh… Elena… hey…”
Chloe snapped out of her shock as well. She could go after him herself, but she couldn’t drag Elena into
this.
She quickly grabbed the bottle from Elena’s hand, but as her eyes moved between Graham and Nathan, something clicked.
All those times he had asked about her friend.
All those questions that seemed casual at the time.

Chloe let out a cold laugh.
Chloe said, “Now it makes sense. You weren’t interested in me at all, you were fishing for information about my friend. Graham, seriously? That’s your move?”
The sadness from earlier was gone, replaced entirely by anger.
Graham’s expression darkened, clearly embarrassed in front of everyone.
He stood up and pointed at her.
Graham said, “Watch your mouth.”
