When they got back to Kingsley Manor, they walked in one after the other.
Alexander didn’t stop. He headed straight upstairs to the study.
Evelyn noticed immediately and walked over to Elena. “What’s going on with him?”
Usually, when they came back together, Alexander would at least sit in the living room for a bit and talk with Walter.
Today, he didn’t even pause.
Elena hesitated. “Not sure. I’ll go check on him.”
She had learned her lesson.
If something was off, it was better to talk it out than let it sit.
Last time, she had overthought things with Fiona for days before everything was cleared up. She wasn’t going through that again.
She left the cake in her room and went upstairs to the study. She knocked.
“Come in,” Alexander said.
She pushed the door open.
He sat behind his desk, one hand on the mouse, his attention fixed on the screen. He didn’t
look at her.
“You busy?” Elena asked, her voice casual.
“Yeah,” he said. “A little.”
The file on his screen hadn’t changed in a while.
“…Okay. I’ll come back later.”
She turned to leave.
“Just finished,” Alexander said.
Elena paused, then turned back and walked over.
“I just wanted to explain something,” she said, stopping in front of the desk. “The guy I had

lunch with today, Gideon, he’s one of Julian’s students. We’ve known each other for years. He just got back, so we grabbed a meal.”
Alexander already knew.
More than she realized.
He knew Gideon had left the country right before her marriage to Nathan, under the excuse of further studies, even though that plan had been in place long before.
The timing was too precise to be coincidence.
He knows exactly what that means.
But he had no intention of pointing it out. He wasn’t about to help another man make his feelings known.
Still, hearing her explain it herself eased something in him.
“Come here,” he said.
He pushed his chair back slightly.
Elena hesitated for a moment, then walked over.
He took her hand and pulled her into his arms, settling her onto his lap. His palm rested gently against her lower abdomen.
“How’s he doing today?” Alexander asked, his voice lower now.
He leaned down, pressing his ear against her stomach as if he could actually hear something.
Elena let out a soft laugh.
“What?” he said, glancing up.
She ran her fingers through his hair.
Thick, dark, soft under her touch.
If the baby takes after him, that would be nice.
“You definitely didn’t pay attention in biology,” she said. “At this stage, it’s probably not even bigger than a blueberry.”
Alexander frowned slightly. “That’s not the point. It kind of is.”

“There’s a connection,” he said quietly. “You wouldn’t get it.”
Elena smiled and nodded. “Okay, then what did you hear?”
Before she could finish, he covered her mouth lightly.
“Don’t talk.”
He leaned back down again, completely focused, staying in that slightly awkward posture.
The moment stretched.
Then he straightened. “I heard something.”
Elena’s cheeks flushed. “Yeah. That was my stomach. I’m hungry.”
She let out a small sigh. “I threw up most of lunch, and I barely ate anything tonight.”

She shifted slightly, trying to stand. “I’m going to have some cake. That place makes really good desserts.”
Alexander caught her wrist.
“Does it?”
“Yeah,” Elena said. “Next time I’ll take you there. I’ll send you the name.”
“No need,” he said. “I’ll try that one.”
Elena blinked. “That one’s mine.”
“Then next time you can get another.”
“That’s not the point,” she said, staring at him. “I want it too.”
Alexander let out a quiet scoff. “All my money is yours, and I can’t have a piece of cake?”
He looked at her. “I drove you to work this morning. Picked you up tonight.”
“Okay, okay, I get it,” Elena said quickly, covering his mouth. “You win. Stop talking.”
She gave him a look. “Since when are you this talkative?”
A moment later, she came back with the cake and set it in front of him.
“Here.”

Alexander didn’t hesitate. He picked up the fork and took a bite.
Even eating cake, he looked composed, unhurried, like he was at some high–end restaurant.
Elena watched him.
His expression softened slightly.
She reached for a tissue and leaned in, gently wiping a bit of cream from the corner of his mouth.
The movement was instinctive. Unusual for her.
Alexander paused, then set the fork down.
“Alright,” he said, looking at her, “what do you want?”
Elena wrinkled her nose. “Do you have to say it like that?”
“Then don’t ask,” he replied.
