Elena trusted her judgment.
Alexander wasn’t that kind of person. The line went quiet.

She could still hear his breathing, steady and faint. He hadn’t hung up.

He cut her off. “Are you in love with him?”
Elena’s grip on her phone tightened.
Gideon’s voice stayed even, but there was no softness in the question.

Elena sat on the bed, her phone still in her hand as her thoughts slowly drifted. There was a time when she truly believed this kind of life was enough, a steady job, financial independence, good friends, a life that felt full on its own, and back then, love had never seemed necessary.

Her favorite bakery.
She opened it.
Inside were three small cakes, a strawberry one just like the one she had given Alexander earlier, plus a green grape and a blueberry.
On top sat a small card.

Then a comment.
[Exception granted today. You can finish all three.]
They had plenty of mutual connections.
Since joining Velmora Media, she’d added quite a few people from Pinnacle Group.
After Alexander commented, her notifications started blowing up. Likes, replies, reactions.
Sophia jumped into the thread.
[Can I get an exception too?]

Elena stared at her screen. She was speechless.

“Hey, my brother wants to know where that bakery is. Those look insane.”
Sophia was downstairs. Elena sent her the location.

“Are you coming to dinner, or are you planning to live off cake tonight?”
Elena smiled and typed back quickly.

He forgot to lock it.

He poured a cup of chamomile tea.
“I can-” Gideon reached for it, but Julian pulled it back slightly.
“You’re like family,” Julian said. “You don’t need to be formal with me.”
He set the cup down in front of him, then looked at his most promising student with a quiet sigh.
“I only found out about Elena not long before you came back. She’s never been one to talk about what she’s been through.”
He paused, then added, “But you don’t need to worry too much. Malcolm and Vivian raised her well. She’s kind, but she knows how to stand her ground.”
A faint, knowing look crossed his face.
“When she found out what Nathan did, she made sure to get every dollar of those medical bills back from the Hawthorne family.”
Elena might seem soft.
But she wasn’t someone who let people walk over her.
Gideon smiled faintly, but there was bitterness in it. “I know,” he said quietly. “But where she is
now…”
He leaned back, gaze distant. “…is it really any different?”
