Chapter 229 Between Men
Alexander closed the folder. Gideon expected irritation.
Instead, Alexander stayed calm.
“I told my wife I’d review it seriously,” he said. “I keep my word.”

He set the folder down. “That said, from where I stand, it’s not something worth this level of time.”
Gideon let out a short laugh. “Of course. You’re a businessman.”
Alexander met his gaze. “And without people like me, do you think your proposal alone could actually make a difference?”
A faint smile touched his lips. “That’s a very optimistic way of looking at things.”
Gideon’s jaw tightened, color rising to his face. “Elena is trusting. But we’re both men, so let’s not pretend.”
His voice sharpened. “Do you really think your intentions are that simple? You’ve barely been married, and you’ve already pushed her into having a child?”
He didn’t believe in Alexander’s sincerity.
Not at all.
“This is between me and my wife,” Alexander said evenly. “You’re stepping out of line.”
That shut Gideon down.
Elena returned just then, sensing the shift immediately.
“How’s it going?” she asked carefully.
Please don’t tell me they argued again…
“Dr. Flores’s proposal is solid,” Alexander said, easy and composed.
He took out his phone. “This is my assistant, Ryan Brooks. He’ll handle the follow–up with you.”
Gideon had no interest in saving a number like that.
But when he saw the relief in Elena’s eyes, he paused. Then he picked up his phone and saved it
anyway.

The rest of the meal went smoother.

Elena relaxed, her appetite finally coming back. She even ate more than usual. But not long after, the nausea hit, fast and sharp.
“I’m sorry,” she said quickly, covering her mouth as she stood. “You guys keep going.”
Alexander moved instantly.
But Gideon was faster.
He pulled a cold bottle of sparkling water from his bag, twisted it open, and handed it to her. “Take small sips. It helps settle your stomach.”
Elena didn’t argue.
She took a few sips, then let out a small breath, her body easing almost immediately.
Her eyes widened. “Wow… that actually worked.”
She was genuinely surprised.
Morning sickness had been hitting her hard, and no matter what she tried, nothing really helped.
And yet, somehow, just a small bottle of sparkling water made her feel like herself again.
Gideon handed her a napkin, glancing briefly at Alexander. “I’ll have someone put together something more structured for you. It should help long–term.”
“Thank you,” Elena said sincerely.
She sat back down.
This time, she avoided anything heavy.
Gideon reached for the soup. Alexander beat him to it.
He picked up her bowl and filled it himself. “Have something warm.”
“Okay.”
“You should still get some red meat in,” Gideon added, placing food on her plate. “You need the protein.”
Alexander added shrimp right after. “Balance it out.”

“She doesn’t like that,” Gideon said, switching it out.
Alexander didn’t back off.
Neither did Gideon. Within minutes, Elena’s plate was overflowing. And they were still going.
She finally set her fork down. “I’m full. Seriously, stop.”
She turned to Alexander. “Are you done? I’m tired. I want to go home.”
If this kept going, it would only get worse.
“Yeah,” Alexander said immediately. “Let’s go.”
They both stood, ready to leave, but just as they reached the door, it swung open and two women walked in, stopping Elena in her tracks the moment she recognized them.
Fiona.
And Zoe.
When did she get back? Wasn’t she still in Eldoria?
Before Elena could think it through, Fiona had already noticed them and smiled, the kind of smile that looked polite and gentle on the surface, yet carried something far more unreadable underneath.
She said something quietly to Zoe, then walked over.
“Alexander, Elena. What a coincidence.”
She looked the same, just a little thinner, her voice still gentle.
“When did you get back?” Elena asked directly.
Fiona blinked, surprised. “About a week ago. I told Alexander before I came back, and he said it was fine.”
She tilted her head slightly, eyes landing on him. “I thought you knew.”
A small pause. “Alexander… you didn’t tell her?”
